The role:
Belhaven Hill is looking to recruit a Kit Matron to join a thriving domestic team in our school community. This role is available from 1 September 2026 at an hourly rate of £12.71. The successful applicant will join a committed team of Domestics providing care to the boys and girls (aged 4-13) in the School. The role requires the applicant to be available to work during term time only (35 weeks per annum), with additional days at the start and end of term. The shift runs 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday.
This is an opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated person to contribute to the School. Belhaven Hill School is Scotland’s leading co-educational full boarding and day preparatory school, set in a beautiful coastal location in Dunbar, 30 miles east of Edinburgh. There are currently 164 pupils aged between the ages of 4 to 13 years, with about 60% of those full boarding.
Main Role
The primary focus of the Kit Matron is to work with the Houseparents, matronal team and domestic department to ensure the smooth running of the domestic routines with regards to the uniform, home clothes and sports kit (as well as other general House laundry) requirements of the boarding and day pupils at the School.
The Kit Matron will take care of any minor alternations or repairs to uniform and assist with the Second Hand Uniform shop stock.
The Kit Matron will also support the domestic department with ensuring that boarding houses are cleaned to a high standard, taking responsibility for a specific area of the boarding houses.
The Kit Matron should be able to convey information about the children to parents and other members of staff when required and therefore needs to be able to observe any change in children’s behaviour or appearance and communicate their concerns (pastoral and medical) to other members of staff.
Key Duties
- To liaise with the laundry team on kit for matches
- To organise the daily kit and clothing checks for pupils
- To check changing rooms are tidy after a games session for Prep & Pre-Prep
- To help be responsible for the care, cleanliness and personal presentation of pupils to the standard set by the school, coordinating with the Deputy Head Pastoral as necessary.
- To be aware of the school uniform requirements of pupils and to ensure they have all items they require; to be responsible for the good standard of clothing of pupils, to collect dirty linen, put away clean clothes and liaise with the laundry on pupil clothing
- To attend departmental meetings and other meetings as required
- To be familiar with the School’s code of practice for health and safety, and its policies and procedures for bullying, child protection etc.
- To assist with the introduction of new pupils and help ensure that any settling in problems are resolved with regards to clothing provision.
- To be a sympathetic presence in the school and to be sensitive to those who may be experiencing difficulty.
- Before children return at the start of term, assist in the getting ready of dormitories and bed making to ensure that all are in good order, repairs have been carried out and rooms are clean and presentable.
- At the end of term, to assist in carrying out a check of houses and advise on replacement or renewal of bedding, fixtures and fittings and furnishings if needed
- Tio undertake general cleaning duties in a specific area of a boarding house
- To assist with Second Hand Uniform sales and stock.
- To ensure that minor alterations or repairs are made to uniform and sports kit where necessary.
