Mechanical Maintenance & Workshop Support Technician

Salary: £14.00 per hour

The Role
Oldfield Forge is looking for a practical, mechanically minded Maintenance & Workshop Support Technician to join our team.
This is a varied, hands-on role for someone with experience in mechanical maintenance, machinery repairs, engineering, or general workshop maintenance who enjoys solving problems and keeping equipment running efficiently.
You will be responsible for maintaining and repairing machinery, tooling and equipment throughout the workshop and forge. You will also be trained in basic blacksmithing skills, allowing you to assist our blacksmith tutors when class pressures arise.
You will receive training in the use of our laser engraving equipment and will also assist with stock cutting and material preparation for our blacksmith tutors.
Key Responsibilities
- Carrying out general mechanical maintenance and repairs on workshop machinery and equipment.
- Diagnosing mechanical faults and carrying out repairs where possible.
- Maintaining and repairing forge tooling and blacksmithing equipment.
- Carrying out routine maintenance and safety checks.
- Repairing, adjusting and modifying workshop tooling where required.
- Assisting with the maintenance and upkeep of the forge and wider workshop.
- Learning basic blacksmithing skills to provide support to blacksmith tutors during busy periods.
- Preparing materials, tooling and equipment for blacksmithing courses.
- Carrying out stock cutting and preparation for tutors and courses.
- Learning to operate our laser engraver and assisting with engraving work.
- Helping maintain an organised, clean and safe workshop environment.
- Identifying equipment that requires repair, replacement or improvement.
- Assisting with practical workshop projects and improvements.
- Supporting the wider team wherever your practical skills can be utilised, which includes welding.
About You
We are looking for someone who:
- Has previous experience in mechanical maintenance, machinery repair, engineering or a similar hands-on role.
- Is confident using hand tools and workshop equipment.
- Can diagnose mechanical problems and find practical solutions.
- Has a good understanding of machinery and mechanical systems.
- Is practical, reliable and able to work independently.
- Takes pride in maintaining equipment and keeping a workshop organised.
- Is comfortable working in a busy and varied workshop environment.
- Has a strong awareness of health and safety.
- Is willing to learn new skills and develop their knowledge.
- Enjoys getting stuck into practical work and solving problems.
Blacksmithing Experience
Previous blacksmithing experience is not essential.
Full training will be provided in the basic blacksmithing skills required to support our tutors. You will also be trained in laser engraving, stock preparation and other workshop processes.
The key requirement is a strong mechanical and practical ability. If you enjoy fixing machinery, working with tools and finding solutions to problems, we can teach you the rest.
Driving Licence
A full UK driving licence is not essential but is advantageous due to our rural location.
