Senior Software Engineer - Glasgow
We’re looking for an experienced full-stack developer to join Phlo as a Senior Software Engineer. You’ll work across our products and platforms as priorities evolve, as part of a close-knit team of developers, designers and product owners. You’ll have the autonomy and influence to help shape both our technology and the future of Phlo.
The Job
On a day-to-day basis, you’ll be involved in:
- Working collaboratively with developers, designers, product owners and the wider business to deliver our vision of the pharmacy of the future.
- Working in small, collaborative teams where AI-assisted development is part of our day-to-day approach. You’ll use AI tools extensively and thoughtfully to spend less time on routine work and more time solving the problems that matter, while sharing effective practices and maintaining strong engineering judgement.
- Communicating complex technical subjects clearly to both technical and non-technical colleagues.
- Building our products and leading by example through hands-on development. You’ll help establish effective engineering practices and maintain the quality of our systems.
- Planning complex work, breaking it into manageable tasks and leading projects through to delivery. Our teams are given the autonomy to shape technical solutions and own their outcomes.
- Designing the technical approach and architecture for projects, identifying the key components, data structures and delivery steps required.
- Researching areas of technical uncertainty, clearly documenting findings and reviewing recommendations with the team.
- Thriving in a fast-moving scale-up environment by getting stuck in, spotting opportunities and taking ownership without waiting for detailed instructions.
- Experimenting with new ideas, building proofs of concept and helping turn promising approaches into practical improvements for the team and our products.
- Mentoring other developers, helping them identify opportunities for growth and supporting them through their development.
- Working with technologies including TypeScript, React, Koa, Next.js, Vite, Playwright, Node.js, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, GCP and Azure DevOps.
The Person
Ideally, we’re looking for someone with:
- A genuine preference for working collaboratively in person and spending regular time with the team in our Glasgow office to workshop ideas, shape architecture and solve problems together.
- Experience building, deploying and supporting software in production, taking ideas from concept through to reliable products used by Phlo’s patients and healthcare partners.
- Deep, hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools as part of everyday engineering work. You’ll actively experiment with new capabilities, develop effective workflows and help others use them well, while maintaining accountability for the quality and security of what you produce.
- A strong understanding of modern web and cloud technologies, with the judgement to choose practical solutions and establish effective technical patterns.
- The ability to take a holistic view of the systems you’re building. You’ll look beyond an individual feature, understand how components fit together and identify emerging patterns, risks and architectural issues early.
- Experience planning and delivering complex work, including breaking larger problems into manageable tasks and taking ownership through to completion.
- A proactive, solution-focused mindset. You’ll be comfortable working through ambiguity, getting stuck into unfamiliar problems and taking action where you see an opportunity to improve something.
- The ability to communicate complex technical ideas clearly and adapt your approach for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Evidence that you can make change happen by testing ideas, demonstrating their value and bringing others with you.
- An open and collaborative attitude. You’ll enjoy sharing knowledge, supporting the development of others and helping the team succeed as a whole.
