Job Description
We are looking for an enthusiastic, practical and welcoming Venue Technician to join the technical team at Greenwich Theatre.
Reporting to the Technical Manager, the Venue Technician will help provide technical support across the theatre's programme of visiting and in-house productions, supporting get-ins, performances and get-outs and helping visiting companies to make the best use of the theatre and its facilities.
This is a varied, hands-on role which would suit someone in the earlier stages of their technical theatre career who already has some professional or practical experience and is looking to develop their skills within a busy producing and receiving theatre.
We are not necessarily looking for someone who is already an expert in every technical discipline. The successful candidate will have a good grounding in technical theatre, a willingness to learn and an interest in developing their experience across lighting, sound, stage and general venue operations.
The Venue Technician will also assist the Technical Manager with the general upkeep of the theatre's technical equipment, backstage areas and building.
Main Purpose
To assist the Technical Manager and wider technical team with the safe and successful installation (Get In), operation (Performance) and removal (Get Out) of visiting and in-house productions.
To provide practical technical support to visiting companies and theatre-makers using Greenwich Theatre.
To operate performances where appropriate and according to experience, with training and support provided where required.
To assist with the routine maintenance and upkeep of the theatre's technical equipment, backstage areas and infrastructure.
To assist with straightforward building maintenance and repairs where appropriate, reporting faults and larger issues to the Technical Manager.
Additional Responsibilities
To assist with the rigging, focusing and programming of theatrical lighting.
To assist with the installation, setup and operation of sound equipment.
To assist with stage preparation, scenic installation, get-ins and get-outs.
To operate lighting and/or sound for performances where required and appropriate to the postholder's experience.
To welcome and support visiting technical and production teams, helping them to understand and use the theatre's technical facilities.
To undertake routine checks and basic maintenance of technical equipment and report any faults or concerns to the Technical Manager.
To help keep backstage, technical and storage areas safe, clean and organised.
To assist with the appropriate storage and management of technical equipment, tools and consumables.
To observe all Health & Safety and safe working policies, with particular regard to backstage areas, stage safety, working at height and manual handling.
To undertake appropriate training provided or arranged by the theatre and to continue developing technical skills across different areas of venue operation.
To assist with the support of apprentices, interns, work experience placements and other learners where appropriate.
To become a key holder for the building and, following appropriate training, occasionally assist with opening or closing the venue.
To provide technical support for other activities taking place within the theatre, including rehearsals, hires, fundraising events and other venue activities where required.
To support the theatre's environmental objectives, including reducing energy use, waste and unnecessary consumption of materials.
To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be asked, where those duties are within the general skill set of the position and broadly within the spirit of the role.
Skills / Experience Needed
Some professional, educational or practical experience of technical theatre or live performance.
A basic working knowledge of theatrical lighting, sound and/or stage systems.
Some experience of supporting live performances, productions or events.
An understanding of the importance of safe working practices within a theatre or live performance environment.
A practical and enthusiastic approach to problem-solving.
Good communication skills and the ability to work positively with visiting companies, performers, creatives and colleagues.
The ability to work as part of a small team and to follow instructions effectively.
A willingness to learn new technical skills and undertake relevant training.
A willingness to work evenings, weekends and variable hours according to the needs of the theatre's programme.
Desirable
Experience of working within a theatre or live performance venue.
Experience of theatrical lighting operation or programming.
Experience of sound operation and/or QLab.
Familiarity with ETC lighting desks.
Experience of get-ins and get-outs.
Experience of basic equipment or building maintenance.
A relevant technical theatre qualification or vocational training.

Hours
Basic 40 hours per week, Monday to Saturday.
The nature of the role requires evening and weekend work, with working hours varying according to the theatre's performance and production schedule.
Salary
£28,000–£30,000 per annum, depending on experience, paid on a monthly basis.
