Band 3 Occupational Therapy Technician
Speciality: Trauma and Orthopaedics
To support the Occupational Therapists to deliver a high quality and comprehensive Occupational Therapy service.
The OT Department is committed to Continued Professional Development and involves all grades of staff in its In-Service Training programmes. We are committed to student training.
***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***
We require a flexible, enthusiastic and motivated individual to work within the Occupational Therapy Team for the Orthopaedics, Surgical wards, under the supervision of Occupational Therapists in Derriford Hospital.
Duties will include assisting in assessments of activities of daily living, home visiting and on-going treatment programmes. Additional responsibilities include delivery of equipment, co-ordinating department equipment loan store, clerical duties and general administration within the Occupational Therapy Department.

Clinical
Explain to patients, relatives and those with whom they come into contact the role of the Occupational Therapist and components of the Occupational Therapy treatment programme.
Obtain informed consent from the patient, and work within the current legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent, prior to commencing any treatment.
Through conversation with the patient, patient’s relatives / next of kin obtain information regarding their social circumstances, difficulties encountered with aspects of Activities of Daily Living and their work & leisure & make follow up phone calls, as directed by the Occupational Therapist.
Implement individual/group treatment sessions, as instructed by the Occupational Therapist - this will include washing, dressing, kitchen or bathing assessment and remedial therapy work, utilizing interpersonal skills and demonstrating empathy, in order to achieve the goal.
Carry out kitchen assessment at the patient’s home as directed by the Occupational Therapist.
Independently manage the Occupational Therapy intervention for specific patients following an agreed protocol.
Assess, Issue and instruct patients and relatives in the safe use of prescribed Occupational Therapy equipment and issue small aids accordingly.
Deliver and fit equipment independently, as prescribed by the Occupational Therapist to the patients’ home.
Facilitate training to Occupational Therapy Team members in the ordering of equipment and wheelchairs.
Use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively with patients. This will include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating, e.g. patient may be depressed, deaf, or who may be unable to accept the diagnosis/prognosis.
