Monday – Friday: 2 Visits Per Day
We are looking for a kind, reliable and experienced carer or personal assistant to support our dad at home following a very difficult period of ill health.
Dad recently returned home after spending seven weeks in hospital following major pancreatic surgery. During his hospital stay, he also suffered a stroke and had several further complications. He is very happy to be back home and is gradually recovering, but he now has a fairly complex daily routine involving nutrition, medication, insulin and blood glucose monitoring.
Our Mum is at home and involved in Dad’s care, particularly later in the day, and the wider family are very supportive. However, we are looking for someone dependable who can provide regular practical support during the day and help us establish a safe, consistent routine at home during the week.
The role
We ideally need support twice a day, Monday - Friday, although we are open to discussing the exact hours and pattern with the right person.
Duties would include:
- Setting up Dad’s morning feed and administrating insulin in accordance with his prescribed care plan
- Checking and recording blood glucose levels
- Understanding what action to take if blood glucose levels are too high or too low, in line with his agreed medical guidance
- Ensuring Dad takes all prescribed medication at the correct times
- Helping to prepare a simple snacks and lunch and clearing away afterwards
- Administering Pancrex at the required times
- Light housework and general tidying relating to Dad’s daily care
- Keeping an eye on Dad’s general wellbeing and letting the family know about any concerns or changes
- Driving to GP appointments and/or collecting prescriptions
- Occasionally household shopping
Dad usually rests after lunch, so there is not necessarily a need for continuous care throughout the day. His current routine means we are likely to need a longer morning visit, some support around lunchtime, and potentially sometimes a shorter visit later in the afternoon for medication and/or blood glucose monitoring.
About you
We are looking for someone who is:
- Kind, calm and patient
- Likes dogs (we have a 5-year-old cocker spaniel called Alfie)
- Reliable and confident working independently
- Experienced in supporting someone with more complex health needs
- Confident with insulin administration
- Confident with blood glucose monitoring and knowing what action to take if levels are too high or too low
- Able to follow medication and feeding schedules carefully
- Comfortable communicating with family members and keeping simple records
- Willing to help with light practical tasks around the home
- Shopping when needed
A medical background or relevant healthcare experience would be particularly beneficial. Alternatively, general experience supporting someone following a stroke, major surgery or with diabetes would be excellent.
Most importantly, we are looking for someone trustworthy and dependable who will get to know Dad, understand his routine and become a consistent part of his support at home.
Potential Hours
We currently expect the role to involve two visits per day, Monday to Friday:
- Morning: 8:30am–10:00am
- Lunchtime: 12:00pm–1:30pm
There may also be a need for a shorter afternoon visit, potentially around 3:00pm–4:00pm, although we are still assessing whether this will be required.
