About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and practical Team Leader / Shift Manager to join our Production team. The contractual job title for this position is Shift Manager.
This is a very hands-on role. You will lead the production team during your shift while also working alongside Production Operators and taking an active part in the day-to-day running of the plant.
You will be responsible for keeping production running safely and efficiently, coordinating the team, dealing with operational issues and maintaining the required standards of Health & Safety, quality, feed safety and housekeeping throughout the shift.
Key Responsibilities
· Leading and coordinating the production team throughout the shift
· Working alongside Production Operators and taking an active part in production activities
· Allocating work and ensuring production priorities are understood and completed
· Operating production machinery and equipment as required
· Supporting start-ups, shutdowns, product changeovers, cleaning and housekeeping
· Monitoring the production process and ensuring the production plan is achieved safely and efficiently
· Making day-to-day operational decisions within the level of training and authority of the role
· Ensuring process checks, production records and shift documentation are completed accurately and on time
· Identifying production problems, carrying out practical fault finding and escalating significant issues when required
· Ensuring an effective handover between shifts
· Ensuring Health & Safety procedures, risk assessments and safe working practices are followed
· Maintaining Good Manufacturing Practice, product quality and feed safety standards
· Stopping production or equipment where there is an immediate safety, quality, feed safety or equipment risk
· Identifying equipment faults and coordinating with Engineering/Maintenance when support is required
· Supporting the training and development of new and existing Production Operators
· Monitoring day-to-day standards of performance, conduct and attendance and escalating significant concerns to the Production Manager
· Leading by example and maintaining high standards of safety, quality, housekeeping and teamwork
What We're Looking For
· Previous experience in a production or manufacturing environment
· Previous Team Leader, Shift Manager, Supervisor or similar leadership experience preferred
· Strong hands-on approach and willingness to work alongside the production team
· Good knowledge of production processes and machinery
· Good practical and mechanical awareness
· Good understanding of Health & Safety requirements
· Understanding of Good Manufacturing Practice and product/feed safety
· Good communication and people-management skills
· Ability to organise, motivate and coordinate a production team
· Good problem-solving skills and confidence making practical decisions
· Ability to take responsibility for the production operation during both day and night shifts
· Good attention to detail and ability to complete records accurately
· Reliable, proactive and able to remain calm under pressure
· Basic numerical and computer skills
Desirable
· Counterbalance Forklift Licence
· Rough Terrain Telehandler Licence
· Experience within animal feed, agricultural, pelleting or similar manufacturing operations
· Experience training and developing production staff
Working Pattern
This is a full-time, permanent position working a Panama shift pattern covering both days and nights. Shifts are 12 hours, averaging 42 hours per week. Weekend and bank holiday working forms part of the normal shift rota.
