Job Summary
As a Fire Watcher, you will serve as a vigilant guardian dedicated to ensuring safety and compliance during construction or maintenance activities that involve open flames, hot work, or other fire hazards. Your primary responsibility is to monitor designated areas continuously, prevent fire incidents, and respond swiftly in case of emergencies. This role is vital in safeguarding personnel, property, and the environment by maintaining a proactive watch and enforcing safety protocols.
Responsibilities
- Understanding the hazards associated with the specific hot work activity.
- Confirming that the Hot Work Permit requirements have been implemented.
- Checking that combustible materials have been removed or adequately protected.
- Ensuring suitable fire extinguishers are readily available and accessible.
- Monitoring adjacent areas, voids, service penetrations, ceiling spaces and areas on the opposite side of walls, floors or partitions where heat transfer may occur.
- Stopping work if fire precautions become ineffective.
- Raising the alarm and initiating emergency procedures if required.
- Conducting post-work inspections and recording the results where required by the permit system.
Skills
- Construction experience or familiarity with construction sites is highly desirable for understanding site-specific hazards.
- Knowledge of system design related to fire detection and suppression systems enhances effectiveness in the role.
- Strong observational skills with keen attention to detail to identify potential hazards before they escalate.
- Ability to remain alert and focused during extended periods of surveillance.
- Excellent communication skills for clear reporting and coordination with team members and emergency responders.
- Physical stamina to stand, walk, or remain stationary for long durations while maintaining vigilance.
Minimum expectation
- Site Fire Safety Awareness.
- Hot Works Permit Awareness.
- Basic Fire Extinguisher Training.
