The Stroke Medicine Service at York Hospital provides comprehensive hyper‑acute, acute, and rehabilitation pathways. Key features include:
Hyper-acute stroke unit with 24/7 thrombolysis provision
Access to thrombectomy pathways via regional neuroscience centres
Daily MDT ward rounds with stroke physicians, advanced practitioners, therapists, and specialist nurses
Rapid-access TIA clinics providing same-day and next-day assessment
Participation in national audits including SSNAP
Integrated community links with Scarborough, Bridlington, Selby, and North Yorkshire teams
Close working relationships with ED, Radiology, Neurology, Elderly Medicine, and vascular surgery
Our service is undergoing expansion due to increased demand, consultant retirements, and a Trust-wide commitment to strengthening specialist stroke care. Your appointment would form a key part of this growth.
As a Consultant in Stroke Medicine , you will play a pivotal role in shaping & delivering high-quality specialist stroke care. Responsibilities include:
Job Plan
A 10‑PA job plan will be offered, including:
Direct Clinical Care : Hyper-acute/acute stroke sessions, TIA clinics, ward rounds, thrombolysis cover
Supporting Professional Activities : Mandatory 1.5 SPAs with potential to negotiate additional SPA time for leadership, research, or education roles
Job plans are reviewed annually & can be flexibly adapted to clinical interests such as:
Research leadership
Education & training roles
TIA service redesign
Stroke rehab pathway & community outreach
Digital innovation or imaging
Candidates wishing to explore a hybrid job between stroke medicine &, for example, elderly care, acute medicine or neurology will be encouraged
Less than full time applicants will be encouraged
Opportunities would exist between us & our partner comprehensive centre Hull e.g. if a candidate wished to work with thrombectomy provision
We would ask that the candidate takes part in the on call rota.
