About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and organised Accounts Manager to oversee the day-to-day accounts function across our group of companies.
This is a varied role with responsibility for ensuring the smooth running of the accounts department, including overseeing our existing Purchase Ledger and Sales Ledger staff, maintaining accurate financial records, producing management information and supporting management with the financial information required to run the businesses effectively.
The successful candidate will be confident managing a busy accounts function, supporting and overseeing members of the team, and taking ownership of financial processes, reporting and deadlines across multiple companies.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the day-to-day running of the accounts department across multiple companies
- Manage and support the Purchase Ledger and Sales Ledger staff, ensuring workloads and priorities are managed effectively
- Review and oversee purchase and sales ledger processes, ensuring records are accurate and up to date
- Oversee supplier payments, ensuring invoices and payments have been appropriately checked and approved
- Monitor aged creditors and debtors, ensuring outstanding balances and queries are appropriately managed
- Oversee credit control and ensure overdue accounts are followed up promptly
- Ensure bank and credit card reconciliations are completed accurately and on time
- Review financial records and investigate discrepancies or issues
- Take responsibility for month-end processes and ensure accounts are completed accurately and within agreed timescales
- Prepare and review monthly management accounts across the group
- Produce and review Profit & Loss reports and Balance Sheets, investigating significant movements or discrepancies
- Provide management with clear and accurate financial information to support business decisions
- Monitor cash flow across the businesses and highlight upcoming requirements or potential issues to management
- Assist with budgeting and financial forecasting, including monitoring actual performance against budgets where required
- Assist with VAT returns and ensure relevant accounting requirements and deadlines are met
- Support the preparation of year-end accounts and liaise with external accountants as required
- Ensure accounting records and supporting information are maintained accurately for year-end and audit purposes where applicable
- Maintain and improve accounting procedures and internal financial controls
- Liaise with suppliers, customers, management and external accountants as required
- Provide support, guidance and training to members of the accounts team
- Identify opportunities to improve processes and efficiency within the accounts department
- Provide hands-on support to the accounts team when required
Requirements
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- Previous experience in an Accounts Manager, Finance Manager, Senior Accounts or similar role
- Experience managing or supervising an accounts team, including overseeing Purchase Ledger and Sales Ledger functions
- Experience preparing or reviewing management accounts
- Strong understanding of Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet and cash flow
- Strong understanding of accounting processes and financial controls
- Experience working with accounts across multiple companies or entities
- Good working knowledge of Xero
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills
- Experience with bank and credit card reconciliations
- Knowledge of VAT and month-end accounting processes
- Experience overseeing credit control, aged debtors and aged creditors
- Experience with budgeting and forecasting would be advantageous
- Ability to analyse financial information, identify discrepancies and communicate relevant findings to management
- Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy
- Strong organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise across multiple businesses and deadlines
- Confidence managing, supporting and developing members of an accounts team
- Strong communication skills and the ability to liaise professionally with colleagues, customers, suppliers and external accountants
- Ability to work independently, use initiative and take ownership of the accounts function
- A proactive approach to improving processes and maintaining effective financial controls
AAT or an equivalent accounting qualification would be advantageous but is not essential where the candidate has suitable experience.
Previous experience within haulage, construction, aggregates, plant hire or a similar industry would also be advantageous.
