Position: Building Control Surveyor (Grade 9)
Location: King Square, Bridgwater, Somerset, TA6 3AR
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Duration: 5+ Months - Remote work once trained on system.
Working Hours: 16 hours per week
Pay Rate: PAYE: £41.54 per hour
Job Responsibilities
- Carry out building control duties in line with current legislation, regulations, and professional standards
- Assess and determine building regulation applications, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements
- Review plans, drawings, specifications, and technical documents submitted for approval
- Undertake site inspections at various stages of construction works
- Identify non-compliance issues and provide professional advice on corrective actions
- Prepare inspection reports, technical reports, and formal decisions
- Liaise with applicants, architects, builders, contractors, and other stakeholders to resolve building control matters
- Provide expert guidance on building regulations, construction standards, and safety requirements
- Manage allocated workload effectively, prioritising tasks to meet service deadlines
- Maintain accurate records using building control systems and databases
- Support enforcement action where necessary for breaches of building regulations
- Work collaboratively with internal teams and external partners to deliver an effective building control service
- Maintain professional knowledge and keep up to date with changes in legislation and industry guidance
Requirements
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience working as a Building Control Surveyor or in a similar building regulations role
- Strong knowledge of Building Regulations, associated legislation, and construction standards
- Experience reviewing technical drawings, plans, and construction information
- Experience carrying out site inspections and identifying compliance issues
- Ability to interpret complex construction details and provide technical advice
- Strong report writing, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to work independently, manage a workload, and meet deadlines
- Good understanding of health and safety requirements within the construction sector
- Ability to use digital systems for case management and reporting
Desirable
- Experience working within a local authority building control service
- Relevant professional qualification or membership (e.g., CABE, RICS, MCABE, or equivalent)
- Experience with enforcement procedures and regulatory investigations
- Knowledge of current changes in building safety legislation
