Job Summary
ATL is looking for an experienced Driver Training & Development Manager to lead and strengthen driver training, safety and compliance across our depot network.
This is a key leadership role for someone who is passionate about developing professional drivers, raising safety standards and using performance data to deliver meaningful improvement. You will oversee Lead Driver Trainers and Driver Mentors, ensuring every driver receives a consistent, high-quality onboarding, assessment and development experience.
Duties
You will take ownership of driver training and development from recruitment through to probation, ongoing coaching and performance improvement. Working closely with HR, Fleet Management, Compliance and operational teams, you will help ensure our drivers operate safely, professionally and in line with legal, customer and company requirements.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading and continuously improving driver onboarding, probation and sign-off processes.
- Managing driver training programmes, including Driver CPC compliance and third-party training where required.
- Supporting compliant driver recruitment, assessments and vehicle readiness for new starters.
- Providing direction, coaching and development to Lead Driver Trainers and Driver Mentors.
- Monitoring Samsara telematics alerts, driver infringements and RoadSkills completion, using insight to identify trends and deliver targeted coaching.
- Supporting investigations into vehicle-related incidents, producing reports and recommending corrective actions.
- Maintaining accurate, auditable records for training, competence assessments, Driver CPC and licence entitlements.
- Producing monthly KPI reports and contributing to strategic initiatives that improve safety, compliance and operational performance.
- Travelling to company depots to complete observations, spot checks and compliance reviews.
Qualifications
- Valid Category C+E (Class 1) driving licence
- Valid Driver CPC and Tachograph card
- Driver Trainer, Train the Trainer, or equivalent recognised training qualification
- RHA Driver Assessor qualification, or equivalent assessment accreditation
- Experience coaching and developing drivers
- Strong organisational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage training schedules and compliance records
- Confidence using Microsoft Office and operational systems
- Ability to interpret driver-performance data and telematics alerts to identify improvement opportunities
Desirable experience includes Transport Manager CPC (Road Haulage), IOSH Managing Safely, NEBOSH General Certificate, Samsara or similar telematics experience, KPI reporting, and experience working across multiple transport depots.t.
