Darlington Borough Council’s Vehicle Maintenance Team is looking to recruit two skilled and motivated individuals to fill these vacancies. We will consider applications for either two HGV Technicians, or one HGV Technician together with an MOT Tester/Mechanic.
We welcome applications from candidates who are qualified as either an HGV Technician or an MOT Tester/Mechanic, and who can contribute to delivering a high-quality, customer-focused vehicle maintenance service.
These are varied and rewarding roles within a busy workshop environment, supporting the maintenance, inspection, and repair of the Council’s fleet, plant, and customer vehicles.
If appointed as an HGV Technician
You will support the delivery of a comprehensive maintenance and servicing function for the Council’s vehicles and plant, ensuring compliance with current legislation and, where required, the Council’s Operator’s Licence. The role will also involve the inspection, servicing, and repair of vehicles for external organisations and members of the public.
You should have approximately three years’ experience as an HGV Technician and be skilled in working on diesel and petrol engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and electrical systems. Experience of light goods vehicles is also desirable. A valid HGV driving licence with a minimum Category C entitlement is required.
The salary for the HGV Technician is £35,396 per annum.
If appointed as an MOT Tester / Mechanic
You will be responsible for carrying out MOT inspections in line with DVSA standards, including Class IV and VII testing, as well as Hackney Carriage and Private Hire vehicle inspections. You will also contribute to the delivery of a high-quality repair and maintenance service for vehicles and equipment used by both internal and external customers.
A DVSA Nominated Tester Certificate (Classes IV and VII) is essential, along with a full, valid driving licence and a City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 qualification (or equivalent) in Motor Vehicle Technology or a related subject.
The salary for the MOT Tester / Mechanic is £32,640 per annum.
The role is based on a 37 hour working week, worked on a rotating shift pattern of 7:00am to 3:00pm one week and 10:00am to 6:00pm the next.
