Bevis Marks Synagogue is the oldest synagogue in the UK, in the City of London by Aldgate. It will be opening a visitor and heritage centre this summer to showcase the fascinating history of this historic synagogue and its community. As part of the visitor experience, we will be providing a small kosher café and gift shop to serve visitors with simple drinks and a light bites and bakes menu and allow them to buy gifts/souvenirs. The café and gift shop will operate from the same counter/till.
Job Description
Hours of work: 4 days a week, 9.00 – 5.30 Tuesday - Thursday and Sunday (Café open from 11.30 – 5.00). Initially 3 days a week during soft open with pro-rated salary.
Some additional hours, paid pro-rata or via TOIL, may be required by agreement for special opening on evenings, Mondays (including some bank holidays) and Fridays but this will be occasional.
Purpose of the Role
1. The purpose of this role is to carry out the operational management of the small café and retail outlet ensuring excellent customer service and meeting all environmental health requirements
2. To ensure customers’ needs are met where at all possible and to create an atmosphere that will be relaxed, lively and friendly.
- To have a sound practical knowledge of Health & Safety and Food Safety to ensure that standards are maintained. We will require a Level 3 Environmental Health Certificate or Level 2 with a willingness to undertake Level 3 training
- To work with front of house volunteers in a collegiate manner.
- To have excellent communication skills and to be an ambassador for the Bevis Marks Synagogue Heritage Foundation.
Areas of responsibility/tasks
Operational
- Manage the day to day service of hot and cold drinks and sandwiches and pastries, in a supervised kosher environment
- Manage the sales of a small range of gifts/souvenirs
- Manage and order the food for the cafe
- Ensure all areas are systematically cleaned, displayed and organised to ensure the appropriate levels of service and standards
- Manage the stock levels for all areas of the café and assist with the shop stock levels to ensure orders are effective and in line with seasonal requirements.
- Assist in the management of all stock rooms and manage the café kitchen so they are systematically cleaned and organised
- Manage stocktakes for the café and assist with the retail department as and when required.
Staff
- To assist volunteers to have good product knowledge, training and the skills in answering questions on allergen information and special dietary requirements.
· To attend meetings to ensure effective communication is met between teams.
Finance
- Ensure every effort is made to achieve budgeted sales and operation expenses.
- Supervision of takings and the reconciliation of tills with daily takings.
- The café and shop till will operate on a Shopify system for which training will be given
Customer service
- Provide high levels of customer care, so that the reputation of Bevis Marks is enhanced and sales targets achieved.
- Ensure that all visitors are greeted warmly and promptly.
- Provide a great service to all our external and internal customers.
- Be smart, polite and helpful at all times.
- Be aware of all the activities offered at Bevis Marks and be able to answer broader questions (or know who to ask).
Fire, Security, Health & Safety and Compliance
- Manage and maintain all food safety procedures for the cafe, taking a proactive approach to hygiene through training, management and review.
- Ensure the safe use of machinery and equipment to minimise risk of injury.
- Ensure display of statutory notices, allergens, labelling and other protocols.
- Be aware of H&S, fire evacuation and emergency procedures.
- Be vigilant for hazards and report them.
· Attend all necessary training courses.
The Catering Supervisor may be required to undertake other reasonable duties which are compatible with the overall scope of this appointment. In addition, all employees are expected to work within the terms of their contract of employment and adhere to policies and the Values and Behaviours
Persons Specification: Knowledge, Experience & General Attributes
· Experience of working in a catering front of house role
· Excellent planning and organisational skills
· Competent in serving a great cup of coffee

· Confident people skills
· Experience of kosher catering is desirable but not essential
