Groundworks Ganger – United Utilities Projects
Location: Head Office - Preston - North West England
Working Arrangement: Site Based / Various United Utilities Projects
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Groundworks Ganger to join our team working on United Utilities projects across the North West.
The successful candidate will lead and coordinate a small groundworks gang, ensuring works are carried out safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.
The role will involve working across water and utilities projects, including excavation, drainage, pipework, reinstatement and associated civil engineering activities.
You will need to be confident leading a team on site, coordinating with supervisors and site management, and ensuring work is completed in accordance with drawings, RAMS and project requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate a small team of groundworkers and labourers.
- Organise daily activities and ensure the gang is working safely and productively.
- Carry out and oversee general groundworks and civil engineering activities.
- Experience working on water and utilities projects is highly desirable.
- Assist with excavation, trenching, drainage and pipework installations.
- Coordinate works around plant and other site operations.
- Ensure works are carried out in accordance with drawings, specifications and RAMS.
- Maintain safe working practices and ensure the gang follows site procedures.
- Liaise with Site Supervisors, Engineers and Site Management.
- Monitor the quality and progress of works.
- Ensure materials, plant and equipment are available when required.
- Identify and report any issues, delays, hazards or changes to the planned works.
- Maintain good housekeeping and environmental standards.
- Support site management with the delivery of works to programme.
- Complete relevant site records and documentation as required.
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience as a Groundworks Ganger / Ganger / Chargehand.
- Strong background in groundworks and civil engineering.
- Experience leading and coordinating a groundworks gang.
- Previous experience working on utilities, water or infrastructure projects.
- Good understanding of excavation, drainage, pipework and reinstatement activities.
- Ability to read and work from construction drawings and RAMS.
- Strong understanding of site health and safety requirements.
- Good communication and leadership skills.
- Reliable, organised and able to work effectively under pressure.
- Valid CSCS or appropriate industry competency card.
Desirable Experience
- Previous experience working directly on United Utilities projects.
- Water industry experience.
- Experience with clean water, wastewater or network infrastructure projects.
- EUSR water industry training.
- NRSWA or street works qualifications.
- CAT & Genny training.
- SSSTS/SMSTS
- Confined-space training.
- Temporary works / excavation support experience.
- Experience working around live utilities and underground services.
- Full UK driving licence.

Project Environment
The role will involve working across United Utilities projects throughout the North West, so flexibility to travel between projects is required.
The successful candidate will be an experienced site-based leader who can take responsibility for the day-to-day coordination of a groundworks gang and ensure works are delivered safely, efficiently and to programme.
Previous United Utilities / water-sector experience would be highly advantageous.

Pay: £24.00-£25.00 per hour
