KS3 Home Education Tutor – English, Maths and/or Science
Location: Verwood & Ferndown, Dorset
Hours: Part-time, weekday daytime
Delivery: Hybrid, with regular face-to-face tuition required
Subjects: English, Maths and/or Science
Year Group: Year 7 About the Role Poppy’s Tutoring Company is looking for warm, engaging and reliable tutors to support an 11-year-old student beginning Year 7 through a structured home-education programme. The student has become increasingly reluctant to attend school, so our priority is to create a positive, manageable and consistent learning experience that helps him rebuild his confidence and engage with education in a way that feels supportive.
We are looking for tutors who can provide one or more of the following: - KS3 English - KS3 Maths - KS3 Science You do not need to teach all three subjects. We are happy to build a small, collaborative team of tutors around the student.
Additional subjects such as History, Geography or languages may be introduced as the programme develops.
The Programme
The student lives between two households on a week-on/week-off shared-care arrangement. His father is based in Verwood and his mother in Ferndown. Regular face-to-face tuition is an important part of this role, as a fully online programme would not be suitable for this student. Some online sessions may be incorporated alongside in-person teaching where appropriate. We are currently considering lessons across approximately three weekday mornings per week, with the final timetable divided between tutors according to subject specialisms and availability. Tutors will provide direct teaching, set appropriate independent work and contribute to monitoring progress so that the student has consistency across both households. Essential Requirements
Please only apply if you meet all of the following requirements:
- Hold a current Enhanced DBS certificate
- Be registered with the DBS Update Service
- Have previous experience teaching or tutoring students in their homes
- Have previous professional teaching and/or tutoring experience
- Hold your own appropriate professional/public liability insurance
- Have experience teaching KS3/secondary-aged learners
- Be confident teaching at least one of the required subjects: English, Maths or Science

- Home education
- Alternative Provision - SEND and neurodiversity
- Supporting students experiencing school avoidance or EBSA
- Re-engaging students who have become anxious, reluctant or disengaged from learning
- Planning personalised KS3 programmes
- Setting and monitoring independent learning Responsibilities
The successful tutor(s) will:
- Plan and deliver engaging, personalised KS3 lessons
- Build a positive and trusting relationship with the student
- Support confidence and gradually rebuild engagement with education
- Provide appropriate academic structure and routine
- Identify strengths, gaps and areas requiring additional support
- Set manageable and meaningful independent work between sessions
- Review work and monitor academic progress
- Adapt teaching according to the student's engagement and individual needs
- Complete clear lesson reports and progress updates
- Communicate professionally with Poppy’s Tutoring Company

The Tutor We Are Looking For
Academic knowledge is important, but the right relationship with this student will be equally important. We are looking for someone calm, encouraging and personable who understands that a student who has disengaged from school may need time to rebuild trust and confidence in learning.
The right tutor will be able to provide clear boundaries and academic structure while remaining flexible, responsive and encouraging.
