B. Mundell Ltd Isle of Islay, Argyll and Bute £15.00 – £25.00 per hour (depending on experience) ·
Full-time, permanent Subsidised staff housing available — family, couple or single occupancy in Bowmore or Port Ellen
About us
B. Mundell Ltd is a family-run haulage and logistics company. We are proud of our vehicles and we are looking for someone who takes the same pride in the trucks and trailers they look after.
Our fleet is made up of 30 HGVs, 6 PSVs and 60 trailers, along with a fleet of LGV Sprinter and Transit vans under 3.5 tonnes. Our Islay workshop is a purpose-built three-bay, two-pit facility opened eight years ago, currently staffed by one mechanic and one apprentice. You would be joining a small, tight-knit team with the equipment and the space to do the job properly.
The role
You will carry out routine and reactive maintenance across the fleet, keeping our vehicles and trailers safe, compliant and looking sharp. Day to day this includes:
- Vehicle and trailer periodic (safety) inspections to a consistently high standard
- Roller brake testing and interpretation of results
- Diagnosis and repair of EBS and ABS braking systems
- Servicing, defect rectification and preparation for MOT and annual test
- Trailer repairs — running gear, suspension, lighting, bodywork
- Accurate completion of maintenance records and inspection paperwork
Hours
07:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday. Overtime Avaiable at weekends.
What we are looking for
- Time-served HGV mechanic or trailer fitter, or equivalent proven experience
- Experience working on Volvo units is preferred
- Sound knowledge of EBS and ABS braking systems
- Confident carrying out vehicle and trailer periodic inspections and brake testing
- A team player who is easy to get along with and brings a positive attitude to the workshop
- Genuine enthusiasm for commercial vehicles and for improving the standard and appearance of a fleet
What we offer
- £15.00 to £25.00 per hour depending on experience
- Enhanced package available for the right candidate
- Subsidised staff housing in Bowmore or Port Ellen — suitable for a family, a couple or single occupancy, which makes relocating to Islay genuinely achievable
- Regular in-house training for all workshop staff, delivered by an ex-DVSA examiner
- Modern, well-equipped three-bay, two-pit workshop
- A settled Monday to Friday day shift
- A family company where you will be known by name, not by a payroll number, and where your ideas on improving the fleet will be listened to
Living and working on Islay
Islay is a working island with a strong community, and our workshop sits at the heart of a busy operation. For the right person this is a rare chance to combine a skilled, secure job with island life — with the housing sorted from day one.

Our interview process
- First interview — Glasgow head office. A chance for us to meet you and talk through your experience.
- Second interview — Isle of Islay. We bring you over to the island so you can see the workshop and the facilities for yourself, view the staff housing and meet the team you would be working with. We cover the cost of this second interview.
We would rather you came, saw the place and made an informed decision than took the job on trust. We are also happy to have an informal chat at any point before you apply if you have questions about the role, the workshop or the housing.
