About Us
Kägwerks, a Codan company, develops advanced tactical communications and networking technology for defence, government and national security customers.
We specialise in mobile ad hoc networking (MANET), edge computing and integrated C5ISR solutions designed to operate in disconnected, degraded, intermittent and bandwidth-limited environments.
Kägwerks is growing rapidly within the MANET market, creating opportunities to work on a wide variety of specialist projects with military teams, government customers and technology partners.
About the Role
We are looking for a Systems Engineer to design, integrate, configure and demonstrate advanced tactical communications solutions.
A major part of the role will involve integrating Kägwerks technology with equipment and systems produced by other manufacturers. You will combine practical knowledge of MANET radios, IP networking, Linux and systems integration to turn customer requirements into resilient, deployable solutions.
This is a varied and customer-facing position. Alongside hands-on technical integration, you will support pre-sales activity, technical demonstrations, trials, Proofs of Concept and customer evaluations.
The role will ideally be based from the DTC office in Whiteley, Hampshire. Remote working may be considered for an exceptional candidate based elsewhere in the UK, although regular travel to Whiteley and customer locations will still be required.
Approximately 30% travel is expected, both within the UK and internationally.
You Will
Design tactical communications and C5ISR solutions based on customer and operational requirements
Integrate Kägwerks systems with radios, sensors, edge computing platforms, software applications and equipment from other manufacturers
Design and configure networks incorporating MANET, IP, SATCOM, LTE/5G and other communications bearers
Configure IP networks, including routing, switching, subnetting, VLANs, multicast, QoS and network segmentation
Develop resilient solutions for disconnected, degraded and bandwidth-constrained environments
Integrate tactical radios, Software Defined Radios and edge computing platforms
Support the deployment of software and data-processing workloads at the tactical edge
Develop interfaces between radios, compute platforms, sensors and applications
Conduct system integration, verification, validation and acceptance testing
Deliver technical demonstrations, trials, Proofs of Concept and customer evaluations
Diagnose complex hardware, software, RF and networking issues
Produce system architectures, interface documentation, configurations, test plans and technical reports
Support pre-sales activity, customer proposals, tenders and Statements of Work
Provide technical support for complex customer deployments
Evaluate third-party technologies and provide feedback to Product Management and Engineering
What We Are Looking For
The most important requirement is practical experience of MANET technology and tactical radio systems. You may currently work for a MANET, tactical communications or defence technology company, or have gained directly relevant experience within the Armed Forces.
You should also have:
Experience in systems engineering, tactical communications, C5ISR, network engineering or systems integration
Practical knowledge of MANET, mesh networking, tactical radios and RF communications
Strong IP networking knowledge, including TCP/IP, IPv4/IPv6, routing, switching, subnetting, VLANs, multicast, QoS, DHCP and DNS
Experience integrating radios, compute platforms, sensors, applications or tactical data systems
Experience working with Linux-based systems
The ability to write scripts or code to support integration, configuration and testing
Experience developing technical solutions or Proofs of Concept against customer requirements
A practical and structured approach to diagnosing complex technical problems
Strong communication skills and the confidence to work directly with customers
The ability to translate operational requirements into workable technical solutions
Advantageous Experience
Experience in any of the following would be beneficial:
TrellisWare, Silvus, DTC or comparable MANET radio technology
Kägwerks, Persistent Systems, OTTO Engineering or similar tactical communications products
Defence, military, government or national security environments
Military communications or C5ISR roles
Docker, Kubernetes or K3s
Edge computing platforms such as NVIDIA Jetson
Python or Bash scripting
REST APIs and software integration
TAK or ATAK
Cursor-on-Target and tactical data distribution
SATCOM or LTE/5G integration
AI/ML model deployment or sensor-data processing at the tactical edge
VPNs, network security, bearer management and network performance analysis
Why Join Kägwerks?
This is an opportunity to join a rapidly growing business operating at the forefront of tactical networking and edge technology.
You will work on varied and technically challenging projects rather than supporting a single fixed product or programme. The role offers exposure to emerging communications technology, specialist military users and complex integration challenges where the quality of the solution has a genuine operational impact.
You will also have the opportunity to work across Kägwerks, DTC and the wider Codan group, collaborating with specialists in MANET communications, RF, embedded systems, edge computing and C5ISR.
Additional Requirements
You must be willing and able to undergo UK Security Clearance
You must be able to undertake regular UK and international travel, including occasional travel at short notice
You must be able to meet relevant customer, security and international travel requirements
