Estimator – Tiling & Natural Stone
Location: Redhill, Surrey
Salary: £40,000–£45,000 per annum, depending on experience
Contract: 9–12 month fixed-term contract (maternity cover), with potential to become permanent
Hours: 8:00am–5:00pm, Monday–Friday
Working arrangement: Office-based, 5 days per week. Part-time working may be considered for the right candidate.
The Role
W.B. Simpson & Sons are looking for an experienced Estimator to join our team at our Redhill office.
We are a specialist tiling and natural stone subcontractor working across a range of construction projects, primarily in London and the South East.
The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing tender enquiries, preparing detailed and competitive quotations, and working closely with clients, suppliers and our internal team throughout the tender process.
This position is initially being offered on a 9–12 month fixed-term contract to provide maternity cover. However, depending on workload, business requirements and performance, there may be an opportunity for the role to become permanent.
Key Responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Reviewing tender enquiry documentation and identifying the drawings, specifications, schedules and other information relevant to our scope of works.
- Reviewing architectural drawings and specifications to establish project requirements and identify the extent of tiling and natural stone packages.
- Carrying out detailed quantity take-offs using Bluebeam or equivalent digital measurement software.
- Preparing accurate and competitive quotations for supply and installation packages.
- Producing and maintaining Excel-based pricing documents, bills of quantities and tender breakdowns.
- Creating and maintaining digital rate sheets, including material, labour, installation and associated costs.
- Building appropriate allowances for preliminaries, access, logistics and other project-specific requirements into quotations.
- Liaising with clients and main contractors throughout the tender process to clarify scope, obtain missing information and develop quotations.
- Liaising with suppliers and our wider supply chain to obtain competitive material and service costs.
- Working with suppliers to obtain technical information where required to ensure proposed materials and systems meet project requirements.
- Reviewing tender documentation for discrepancies, exclusions, risks and potential commercial considerations.
- Identifying value-engineering opportunities and alternative materials or installation solutions where appropriate.
- Preparing clear tender qualifications, assumptions and exclusions to accompany quotations.
- Reviewing subcontractor and supplier quotations to ensure they meet the requirements of the tender.
- Maintaining accurate records of enquiries, quotations and tender information.
- Assisting with tender handovers to the commercial and project teams following successful awards.
- Supporting the wider estimating and commercial team as required.
Skills & Experience
We are looking for someone with:
- A minimum of 3 years’ experience in an estimating, quantity surveying or similar commercial role within the UK construction industry.
- Strong understanding of architectural and construction information, including drawings, specifications and schedules.
- Experience preparing quotations and carrying out quantity take-offs.
- Strong working knowledge of Bluebeam, or substantial experience using comparable digital take-off software.
- Strong Excel skills and confidence creating and working with pricing spreadsheets.
- Good commercial awareness and an understanding of construction costs.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to identify inconsistencies or missing information within tender documentation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Confidence communicating with clients, contractors, suppliers and colleagues.
- Excellent organisation and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tenders and deadlines simultaneously.
- The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Experience within the tiling, natural stone, finishes or specialist subcontracting sectors would be advantageous, although it is not essential for candidates with strong relevant construction estimating experience.
