The Directorate of Facilities Management & Commercial Services is dedicated to creating a vibrant, safe and inspiring University from the spaces used for study, to where our students live, eat and connect.
The wide-ranging Facilities section within the directorate provides an array of services to students and staff, including campus safety, cleaning, grounds maintenance, space management, reception and accommodation services to name a few.
The Head of Active Travel & Sustainable Transport will lead a small team who aim to make travelling and moving around campus better for everyone, easing pressure on the environment and nearby communities in the process.
The postholder and their team will drive improvements in sustainable travel options and promote positive behaviour change, supporting the University’s environmental ambitions and commitment to responsible travel.
The Head of Active Travel and Sustainable Transport plays a pivotal role in shaping how the University manages access, mobility, and its wider environmental impact, with a key focus on improving accessibility for our students, staff and visitors.
This role provides strategic and operational leadership for the University’s sustainable travel initiatives, including the University bus service and the effective management of university car parks, ensuring that services are safe, compliant, and delivered in a fair and equitable way for staff, students, and visitors.
Leading a small, dedicated team, the role requires strong stakeholder engagement across the University and beyond, including collaboration with staff and student groups, disability networks, the local authority, and external transport partners.
Some hybrid working will be available for this role, however, as the lead for a team of frontline staff and with responsibility for on campus travel services, there will be an expectation that the postholder will be on site at our university campus for a minimum of 60% of their time, and around important events.

- Specialist knowledge of private land parking policies, systems, operations, regulations and legislation
- Experience of developing and delivering sustainable travel strategies and plans within a large, complex organisation.
- Knowledge of sustainable travel principles and current developments in the provision of sustainable travel initiatives
