Job Summary
One Harley Street is seeking an experienced and talented Outpatient Sister/Charge Nurse to join the team at London’s top medical district. The Outpatient Sister/Charge Nurse will provide senior clinical input and visible leadership across the Outpatient department areas, supporting the set up and running of consultations, minor procedures, pre-assessments and diagnostic imaging services. The post holder will act as nurse in charge of the Outpatient department supporting a busy and dynamic environment in line with Care Quality Commission fundamental standards.
One Harley Street is a new Ambulatory Surgical Centre due to open early 2027 and will deliver high-volume elective day surgery across multiple specialties, without routine overnight care. As a small, integrated clinical team, all staff will be expected to demonstrate flexibility and a collegiate approach, supporting other clinical areas where clinically appropriate and in line with their professional registration.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Leadership and Guidance
· Support the delivery of safe, effective and high-quality nursing care across Outpatient Department areas.
· Act as nurse in charge of the Outpatient Department.
· Ensure compliance with national guidance, local policies, infection prevention and control standards and medicines management requirements.
· Act as the first point of escalation for clinical concerns within the Outpatient Department.
· Support all services users, third party service users and wider teams within One Harley Street.
· Promote a healthy and just culture of incident reporting, shared learning and continuous improvement.
Operational Management
· Plan and coordinate consulting room activity, minor procedures, nurse-led clinics and ultrasound clinics.
· Manage patient flow in alignment with agreed Outpatient pathways.
· Support safe staffing, skill mix and workload allocation during the shift, including support to other clinical areas when operationally required, within the bounds of professional competence.
· Forward plan and support activity ramp up within Outpatient department areas.
· Escalate operational or safety concerns appropriately.
· Participate in safety meetings in accordance with One Harley Street Governance structure.
Workforce Leadership
· Support staff development through induction & orientation, competency assessments and mandatory training compliance.
· Provide mentorship, coaching, supervision and guidance to junior members of staff.
· Contribute to regular staff 1:1’s, appraisals and performance management processes.
· Lead Outpatient department daily safety huddles, meetings and monthly team meetings.
Communication and Stakeholder Engagement
· Maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders; Outpatient bookings, Consultants, Pre-assessment, Ambulatory care unit, Theatre, Recovery, Physiotherapy, wider teams and third-party service users.
· Ensure effective and professional communication with patients and visitors throughout the Outpatient and Ambulatory pathway.
· Contribute to multidisciplinary team discussions to support patients throughout the Outpatient and Ambulatory pathway.
Education and Professional Development
· Maintain advanced clinical competencies, professional registration and revalidation.
· Participate in appraisal, supervision and ongoing professional development.
· Support a positive learning culture within the Outpatient Department and Hospital.
Additional Responsibilities
· Support medical emergencies and clinical escalation as required.
· Ensure a safe, compliant and well-presented clinical environment.
· Provide flexible cross-departmental support when required – for example Pre-assessment, Imaging and Ambulatory care unit.
