We are seeking an experienced Commercial Vehicle Technician to join our growing manufacturing team. This is a hands-on role responsible for the assembly, commissioning, maintenance and refurbishment of commercial vehicle trailers and specialist equipment. The successful candidate will build trailers from bare chassis through to completed vehicle, ensuring all systems are installed, tested and commissioned to the highest standards of quality and safety.
This is not a trainee position unless significant industrial experience has been achieved.
Required Knowledge & Skills
(Desirable, not all essential)
- Experience: Approximately 5 years' experience in commercial vehicle assembly, trailer manufacturing, heavy vehicle maintenance, agricultural machinery or similar heavy engineering industries.
- Education: NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, Apprenticeship or equivalent in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- Mechanical Assembly: Extensive experience assembling mechanical systems from engineering drawings and work instructions.
- Commercial Vehicles: Good understanding of trailer chassis, suspension, braking systems, axles, landing legs, body systems and coupling equipment.
- Pneumatic Systems: Experience installing, fault finding and testing pneumatic brake systems including WABCO and Haldex/
- Electrical Systems: Ability to install and troubleshoot 12V/24V electrical systems, lighting, wiring looms and ancillary equipment.
- Hydraulic Systems: Experience with hydraulic installations is desirable.
- Engineering Drawings: Ability to accurately interpret engineering drawings, assembly instructions and bills of materials.
- Inspection & Testing: Understanding of dimensional inspection, torque control, commissioning and quality assurance procedures.
- Industry Background: Commercial vehicles, defence, heavy plant, agricultural equipment or specialist vehicle manufacturing desirable.
- Other: Full UK driving licence and HGV desirable.
Roles & Responsibilities
Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will:
- Build commercial vehicle trailers from bare chassis through to completed vehicle.
- Install and commission suspension, braking, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems.
- Assemble vehicle bodywork, running gear and customer-specific equipment to engineering drawings and specifications.
- Carry out trailer servicing, maintenance, refurbishment and repair activities.
- Diagnose and rectify mechanical, pneumatic and electrical faults.
- Perform functional testing and commissioning prior to vehicle release.
- Ensure all assemblies meet engineering drawings, customer specifications and company quality standards.
- Complete inspection documentation, quality records and build documentation accurately.
- Work closely with Engineering to resolve build issues and support prototype developments.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement within manufacturing and assembly processes.
- Maintain workshop equipment, tools and housekeeping to a high standard.
- Comply with all Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental procedures.
- Support apprentices and junior technicians where appropriate.

Pay: £30,000.00-£35,000.00 per year
