Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced and confident Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our small SEND education provision, with primary responsibility for delivering English lessons.
The successful candidate will take day-to-day responsibility for English teaching within the provision. This will include delivering planned English lessons, adapting learning for individual pupils, monitoring progress and helping pupils work towards their English qualifications.
Alongside this main responsibility, the HLTA will also support pupils across the wider curriculum and carry out general HLTA duties when required.
Main Duties
- Take primary responsibility for the day-to-day delivery of English lessons.
- Deliver structured English lessons to individuals, small groups and classes.
- Deliver learning towards appropriate English qualifications and curriculum outcomes.
- Prepare, adapt and organise English lesson materials and resources.
- Adapt teaching to meet the individual needs and ability levels of pupils with SEND.
- Assess pupils' English work and monitor their progress.
- Identify gaps in learning and provide targeted English interventions and catch-up support.
- Maintain appropriate records of pupils' English progress and achievement.
- Provide feedback on progress to teaching staff and senior leaders.
- Encourage pupils to develop confidence in reading, writing, speaking and communication.
- Support pupils with SEND to engage with learning and make progress.
- Provide classroom cover and deliver other planned lessons when required.
- Support learning across Maths and other curriculum areas where needed.
- Support positive behaviour and help pupils regulate and re-engage with learning.
- Build positive and professional relationships with pupils.
- Follow safeguarding, behaviour and school policies.
- Work closely with teachers, teaching assistants and senior staff.
Essential Requirements
- HLTA status/qualification or a relevant Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification with substantial experience working at HLTA level.
- Strong English skills and confidence delivering English lessons.
- Experience delivering lessons or learning activities independently.
- Ability to plan, prepare and adapt English learning activities.
- Experience assessing pupil work and monitoring progress.
- Experience working with children or young people.
- Good standard of Maths.
- Confident classroom and behaviour management.
- Ability to work effectively with pupils who have additional learning, behavioural or emotional needs.
- Reliable, calm and professional approach.
Desirable
- Experience delivering secondary English, Functional Skills English or GCSE English.
- Experience supporting pupils towards English qualifications.
- Previous experience in a SEND, alternative provision or specialist education setting.
- Experience working with secondary-age pupils.
- Experience leading a subject area or taking responsibility for pupil progress.
- Experience with SEMH, autism, ADHD or pupils who have struggled in mainstream education.
The successful applicant will be subject to appropriate safeguarding checks, including an Enhanced DBS check.
This is not a standard classroom support role. English will be the HLTA's main area of responsibility, and we are looking for someone who is confident taking ownership of English lesson delivery and pupil progress, while also contributing to the wider work of the provision.
Pay: £17.00-£22.00 per hour
