Cleaning Supervisor

Working Pattern: Term time only plus 4 weeks (total of 44 weeks per year)

Role Purpose
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Cleaning Supervisor to lead the cleaning team supporting Washwood Heath Multi Academy Trust.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising the day-to-day cleaning operation, ensuring high standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and presentation are consistently delivered across the Trust's schools. You will lead by example, support and develop cleaning operatives, monitor performance standards, and ensure compliance with all health and safety, safeguarding, and quality requirements. The role requires a proactive individual who can effectively manage people, maintain standards, and build positive relationships with school staff and stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Supervision
- Supervise, motivate, and support a team of cleaning operatives
- Allocate daily tasks and ensure work is completed to the required standard
- Conduct regular quality inspections and housekeeping audits
- Monitor team attendance, timekeeping, and performance
- Provide coaching and support to team members to drive continuous improvement
- Assist with recruitment, induction, and training of new employees
- Promote a positive and professional working culture
Cleaning Operations
- Ensure all daily, weekly, and periodic cleaning tasks are completed in accordance with the Trust's cleaning specification
- Monitor standards within classrooms, offices, corridors, washrooms, dining areas, sports facilities, and communal spaces
- Ensure classrooms are left ready for use, including chairs positioned correctly and furniture returned to its proper place
- Carry out cleaning duties when required to support service delivery
- Organise and oversee deep cleaning programmes during school holidays and non-term periods
- Coordinate cleaning support for events, parents' evenings, lettings, and school functions as required
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation, COSHH requirements, and company procedures
- Conduct routine safety checks and risk assessments
- Ensure biohazard and spill response procedures are followed in line with regulations
- Monitor the safe use, storage, and maintenance of cleaning equipment and chemicals
- Maintain accurate records and compliance documentation
- Ensure all cleaning staff adhere to safeguarding procedures required within educational environments
Quality & Service Standards
- Ensure all areas meet the agreed contract cleaning standards
- Investigate and resolve cleaning issues promptly and professionally
- Conduct regular inspections and provide feedback to the team
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and service delivery
- Maintain excellent working relationships with school representatives, staff, and stakeholders
Administration
- Maintain cleaning schedules, audits, stock records, and quality reports
- Order and monitor cleaning consumables and materials
- Assist with payroll information, holiday planning, and rota management where required
- Produce operational reports and communicate service updates to management
Person Specification
Essential Requirements
- Previous supervisory experience within the cleaning, facilities management, education, healthcare, or commercial cleaning sector
- Strong leadership and people management skills
- Ability to motivate and develop a team
- Good knowledge of cleaning methods, equipment, and safe systems of work
- Understanding of COSHH and Health & Safety requirements
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Good communication and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to work independently and make decisions
- Commitment to delivering high standards of customer service
Desirable
- Experience within a school or educational environment
- BICSc qualification or equivalent cleaning industry training
- Experience of quality auditing and inspection processes
- Knowledge of safeguarding procedures
- Experience using digital audit or facilities management systems
