Manual Horizontal Borer Setter/Operator – Days & Nights
Location: Ashton-Under-Lyne
Salary: Up to £20.00 per hour, dependent on skill and experience
Shifts: 1 x Days | 1 x Nights
Overtime: Excellent overtime opportunities available
We are currently recruiting for two experienced Manual Horizontal Borer Setter/Operators to join an established engineering business on a permanent basis.
We have one position available on days and one on nights.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Horizontal Borer with a strong machining background, or a skilled Miller looking to develop their experience in heavy engineering.
You will be producing medium to heavy workpieces to customer drawings and specifications, with a strong focus on quality, accuracy and self-inspection.
The Role
As a Manual Horizontal Borer Setter/Operator, you will be responsible for setting and operating manual horizontal boring machinery to produce high-quality components to customer requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Set and operate manual horizontal boring machines
- Alternatively, operate manual milling machinery where appropriate
- Manufacture medium to heavy engineering components
- Work accurately from customer-issued engineering drawings and specifications
- Select appropriate tooling, speeds and feeds
- Set machines and complete machining operations to required tolerances
- Carry out accurate self-inspection of completed work
- Use appropriate measuring and inspection equipment
- Maintain high standards of quality and workmanship
- Follow all Health & Safety procedures
- Work independently and as part of a production team
- Complete overtime when required
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for an experienced machinist with:
- Proven experience setting and operating manual horizontal boring machines
- Alternatively, a strong manual milling background will be considered
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
- Experience working with medium to heavy workpieces
- Good understanding of machining processes, tooling, speeds and feeds
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to self-inspect work to drawing requirements
- Reliable and professional approach
- Ability to work independently
- Flexibility to work overtime when required
Day Shift
Monday – Thursday: 08:00–16:30
Friday: 08:00–13:00
37 paid hours per week
- 30-minute unpaid lunch Monday–Thursday
- No lunch break required on Friday
- Minimum 11 hours overtime expected per week
- Overtime paid at T+⅓
- Sunday overtime paid at T+½
Night Shift
Monday – Thursday: 18:00–06:00
- 4 x 12-hour shifts
- Paid lunch break
- Night shift paid at T+⅓
- Overtime available Friday after 13:00, Saturday and Sunday
- Night-shift overtime paid at T+½
Pay & Benefits
- Basic rate of up to £20.00 per hour, depending on skills and experience
- Shift allowance paid in addition to the basic rate
