Balfour Beatty Living Places works in partnership with local authorities to deliver and maintain the infrastructure that keeps communities moving. We are looking for an experienced Commercial Manager to join our Living Places business. This is a key commercial leadership role, responsible for managing the financial and contractual performance of projects from tender stage through to delivery, ensuring strong governance, robust cost control and positive outcomes for our customers, stakeholders and supply chain.
As Commercial Manager, you will be an integral part of the project delivery team, leading the commercial approach across projects that can be worth many millions of pounds. You will bring strong commercial awareness, confidence in client liaison, proven leadership skills and the ability to manage risk, procurement, reporting and contract performance effectively
What you'll be doing
Key Responsibilities
You will provide commercial leadership across the contract or project, ensuring that financial performance, contractual obligations and commercial governance are managed effectively.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading the preparation of monthly CVRs and associated commercial reports
- Managing commercial risk and opportunity across the project
- Supporting tender reviews, cost data analysis and target cost preparation
- Providing commercial input into value engineering reviews
- Managing procurement strategies, supply chain requirements and subcontract arrangements
- Representing the financial and contractual interests of the business in progress meetings
- Liaising with customers, stakeholders, subcontractors and the wider project team
- Ensuring programme issues are identified and commercially managed
- Managing disallowed costs and supporting strong cost control
- Feeding commercial data back into planning, estimating, marketing and sales teams
- Leading, supporting and developing commercial team members
- Supporting recruitment, retention, PDRs, training and professional development within the commercial team
Who we're looking for
We are looking for a commercially strong, confident and collaborative individual who can build relationships, lead teams and provide clear commercial direction.
You will ideally have:
- A BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying, or equivalent experience
- Membership of RICS, ICES or CIOB
- Strong experience within commercial management in construction, infrastructure, highways or local authority frameworks
- Experience managing commercial teams and developing others
- Strong understanding of procurement, contract management, cost reporting and risk management
- Ability to liaise effectively with clients, stakeholders, supply chain partners and internal teams
- Excellent communication, negotiation and leadership skills
- A clear focus on governance, customer needs and achieving results
