Clinical Lead – Daytime Position Job Overview
We are looking for an experienced, confident and compassionate Clinical Lead to join our 34-bed nursing and residential care home.
This is a daytime position only.
This is a senior, hands-on role for someone with strong and extensive experience within a nursing or residential care home environment. The successful candidate will work closely with the Registered Manager and take a lead role in the day-to-day clinical and operational running of the home.
The Clinical Lead will provide leadership, guidance and support to registered nurses, senior carers and care staff, ensuring residents receive safe, effective and person-centred care.
The role requires someone who is highly organised, approachable and confident in clinical decision-making, staff coordination, care planning and managing the everyday operational demands of a busy care home.
Responsibilities
- Provide clinical leadership, guidance and supervision to registered nurses, senior carers and care staff.
- Oversee the day-to-day clinical care of residents, ensuring nursing and care needs are identified, assessed and managed appropriately.
- Oversee medication management and administration, ensuring medicines are managed safely and MAR records and related documentation are accurate and up to date.
- Ensure residents' care plans, risk assessments and clinical records are regularly reviewed and reflect their current needs.
- Support the nursing and care team in managing residents with complex nursing needs, dementia, long-term conditions, frailty and end-of-life care needs.
- Monitor changes or deterioration in residents' health and ensure appropriate and timely referrals are made to GPs and other healthcare professionals.
- Coordinate with GPs, pharmacies, district nurses, hospitals, specialist nurses and other multidisciplinary professionals involved in residents' care.
- Lead and participate in clinical handovers, staff meetings and resident reviews, ensuring important information and changes are effectively communicated.
- Support the Registered Manager with staffing arrangements, shift cover, staff deployment and maintaining an appropriate skill mix across the home.
- Provide day-to-day support and supervision to nursing and care staff, including addressing clinical concerns and supporting good professional practice.
- Monitor key clinical areas including falls, wounds and pressure care, nutrition and hydration, continence, infection prevention, weight loss and medication incidents.
- Complete and oversee clinical audits, identify areas requiring improvement and ensure actions are completed and followed up.
- Support the investigation of accidents, incidents, safeguarding concerns, medication errors and complaints, ensuring lessons are learned and improvements implemented.
- Ensure nursing equipment, medication supplies and other essential clinical resources are appropriately maintained and available.
- Support staff training, competency assessments, supervision and development, particularly in areas relevant to nursing and elderly care.
- Maintain high standards of infection prevention and control, safeguarding, clinical governance and health and safety.
- Support the Registered Manager in ensuring the home remains compliant with CQC regulations and relevant health and social care standards.
- Promote a culture of dignity, respect, choice and person-centred care, ensuring residents and their families are involved in decisions about their care.
- Act as a visible and hands-on Clinical Lead, supporting the team where required to maintain safe and effective care.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Ideally a Registered Nurse (RGN/RMN) with a valid UK NMC registration.
Please note: NMC registration is the preferred qualification for this position; however, we welcome applications from candidates with a strong and proven clinical care-home background who can demonstrate the knowledge, experience and leadership skills required for the role.
- Candidates without current NMC registration may also be considered where they can demonstrate a strong clinical background and substantial experience within nursing or residential care homes.
- Significant experience working in a nursing or residential care home, preferably supporting older people, residents living with dementia and individuals with complex care needs.
- Previous experience as a Clinical Lead, Senior Nurse, Deputy Manager, Senior Carer or similar senior clinical role is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of care planning, risk assessments, medication management, safeguarding and clinical documentation.
- Good knowledge of clinical areas including falls management, pressure care, wound care, nutrition and hydration, infection prevention and end-of-life care.
- Experience supervising, supporting and coordinating nursing and care staff.
- Good understanding of CQC requirements and regulatory standards within the care-home sector.
- Ability to recognise deterioration or changes in a resident's condition and ensure appropriate action or referral is undertaken.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage staffing, clinical priorities and day-to-day operational issues.
- Confident working with GPs, pharmacies, district nurses, hospitals and other healthcare professionals.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with residents, relatives and staff.
- Able to work effectively under pressure, prioritise workload and maintain accurate records.
- A practical, hands-on approach to leadership, with a commitment to maintaining high standards of safe, compassionate and person-centred care.
Working Pattern
Daytime position only.
The Clinical Lead will work during the daytime and will be responsible for supporting the clinical and operational management of the home during their working hours.
