Ultrasound Assistant Support role within GP clinics
Location:
Multiple GP surgery sites across Huddersfield, West Yorkshire
Purpose of the Role:
To assist trained sonographers or visiting imaging professionals in the set‑up and delivery of ultrasound procedures within GP surgeries, improving patient flow, comfort, and clinic efficiency.
Key Responsibilities: Clinical and Patient Support
- Prepare and maintain the ultrasound room before each procedure, ensuring cleanliness, sterility, and that necessary supplies and equipment are in place
- Greet and register patients, verifying identity and basic history; assist with positioning and ensure dignity and privacy throughout scans.
- Provide reassurance and comfort to patients before, during, and after procedures; assist those with limited mobility to & from the examination couch
Equipment Maintenance and QA
- Clean transducers and equipment, including intracavity probes, using approved disinfection methods (e.g. Tristel Trio), and maintain audit records
- Carry out regular quality assurance checks (e.g. weekly equipment checks) and report faults immediately
Teamwork and Service Support
- Liaise with GPs, administrative staff, and external clinical services to ensure coordinated patient care and smooth clinic workflow
Person SpecificationEssential Qualifications & Experience
- Previous experience in a healthcare support or imaging assistant role is desirable
- Basic literacy and numeracy; confident use of computers and Microsoft Office or clinical IT systems
Skills & Competencies
- Excellent communication skills; able to interact empathetically with patients and professionals at all levels. Must maintain patient confidentiality at all times
- Able to work independently and as part of a team, adapting to changes in workload or clinic demands
- Good physical mobility; capable of safe patient handling, equipment movement, standing for extended periods, and performing repetitive tasks

Working Patterns
- Likely part‑time 22-24 hours per week, Mon, Wed Fri and with potential for weekend sessions depending on extended clinic hours.
- Flexibility to rotate across Huddersfield surgery sites as needed.
Safeguarding & Regulations
- Enhanced DBS clearance required (“Disclosure and Barring Service”) for patient contact positions
- Compliance with local health & safety protocols, including infection control, PPE guidelines, and COVID‑19 related procedures where relevant
Training & Development Opportunities
- On‑the‑job training in ultrasound system use, infection control protocols, manual handling, and practice-specific procedures.
- Encouragement to engage in CPD, internal training sessions, and cross‑training within the broader clinical support team
Desirable (but Not Essential)
- Previous exposure to ultrasound or radiology departments (even as admin or support)
- Formal training or certification in healthcare support, e.g. Healthcare Assistant or Assistant Practitioner qualification, Band 3/4 equivalent.
- Understanding of GDPR, patient data standards, and NHS frameworks.
