Why Join Us
- £27,000 – £33,000 depending on skill and experience.
- Flexible hours — schedule your own day. As long as clients get a great experience, it doesn't matter what times you work.
- 1 day a week in the office, 4 from home — once you're through your initial training. You'll be in the office more at the start so we can train you properly and make sure you understand how we work.
- A long-term career in bookkeeping, not a stepping stone to becoming an Accountant.
- Modern tech throughout — Xero, Dext and GoCardless — and automated workflows that chase clients for you.
- Regular improvement meetings, and the ability to improve the processes you work on. We encourage improvement ideas all the time.
- A very fast-growing firm, with plenty of scope to grow with us — including progression to Senior Bookkeeper as you develop.
- Free on-site parking.
Position Summary
The Bookkeeper will look after the bookkeeping and VAT for a list of limited company clients. This role involves full double-entry bookkeeping, preparing and submitting VAT Returns under Making Tax Digital, and being the point of contact for chasing those clients for missing bookkeeping information — which means a lot of friendly, patient contact by phone and email. The ideal candidate wants to build a long-term career in bookkeeping and become highly skilled at it, rather than qualify as an Accountant. You don't need to be qualified — we care far more about your bookkeeping and VAT knowledge, and whether you fit our team.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date financial records for your clients.
- Prepare and submit VAT Returns under Making Tax Digital.
- Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, sales ledger and purchase ledger.
- Reconcile control accounts — VAT, PAYE, director's loan and Corporation Tax — back to what's actually owed at HMRC.
- Post journals including depreciation, accruals and prepayments.
- Act as the point of contact for chasing your clients for missing bookkeeping information, warmly and patiently, by phone and email.
- Progress into larger and more complex clients over time, and into monthly management accounts if you want to.
- Contribute improvement ideas and help improve the processes you work on.
- Keep up to date with UK VAT and HMRC requirements.
Skills
- Strong double-entry bookkeeping — you understand what's happening behind the software, not just where the buttons are.
- Solid UK VAT knowledge, including Making Tax Digital.
- Confident with the balance sheet and reconciling tax liabilities back to HMRC.
- Experience in an accountancy practice preferred, but industry backgrounds are genuinely welcome — fitting our team matters more to us than where you've worked.
- Comfortable working in accounting software. We use Xero and Dext, and we'll train you if you haven't used them.
- Excellent verbal communication — you'll be on the phone a lot, and you need to enjoy it.
- Patience and warmth when chasing clients for the fifth time.
- Good organisational and time management skills, and the ability to work independently.
- AAT, ICB or IAB qualification useful but not essential.
- Right to work in the UK.
