Join NY Highways’ Winter Maintenance Team and play a vital role in keeping roads safe for communities, businesses, and emergency services.
This is a flexible seasonal role, ideal for experienced drivers looking for rewarding work over the winter months. Many of our drivers return year after year.
What you’ll be doing
- Operating a gritter to treat highways during adverse weather
- Supporting safe travel across North Yorkshire’s road network
- Working as part of a responsive, safety-focused team
- Being on standby and ready to respond when conditions change
Shifts & availability
Winter work is weather-dependent, so flexibility is essential.
Standby rota includes:
- Weekday mornings: 00:00 – 07:30
- Weekday evenings: 16:00 – 00:00
- Weekends: 24-hour cover (day & night)
Additional working hours may fall anywhere within:
- Mornings: 00:00 – 12:00
- Afternoons/evenings: 12:00 – 00:00
What you’ll need
- Class 2 (Category C) licence
- Driver CPC
- Digital Tachograph card
- Willingness to complete Winter Service (6159) training (provided if needed)

- £24 per shift
- Up to £120/week (weekday mornings)
- Up to £216/week (evenings & weekends combined)
