Job Title: Pall Bearer, Logistics & Driver (with Mortuary Duties)

Contracted Hours: Monday–Friday, 9:00am–3:00pm — 30 hours per week, including paid lunch break (contracted hours plus monthly on call additional payments on monthly timesheets)
Additional Requirement: One week on-call per month, plus additional overtime when required (which is very likely)
About the Role
Clarkson's Independent Funeral Directors is seeking a respectful, reliable and compassionate individual to join our dedicated team as a Pall Bearer, Logistics & Driver.
This is a hands-on and varied role supporting our funeral services, logistics and mortuary operations. You will work closely with our small team to ensure that our services are carried out with dignity, respect and professionalism.
The role is suited to someone who is confident driving, willing to undertake removals and logistics work, and comfortable assisting with general care within the mortuary.
Key Responsibilities
- Caring for people in our care with professionalism, dignity and respect at all times
- Attending to families at funerals when required
- Pall bearing as part of a team during funeral services
- Assisting the Senior Logistics & Pall Bearer, Josh Jones, with day-to-day duties
- Driving our insured work vehicles for collections, removals and logistics across Bath, Frome, Saltford and surrounding areas
- Training to drive the company limousine and hearse when required
- Removing and attending to people who have died in homes, hospitals and care facilities
- Assisting with general care within the mortuary
- Preparing coffins and assisting with funeral arrangements and set-ups
- Cleaning, maintaining and preparing mortuary areas
- Maintaining the cleanliness and readiness of vehicles, equipment and company property
- Loading, unloading and transporting coffins and funeral equipment safely and respectfully
- Working as part of a close-knit team and assisting colleagues wherever required
- Must be able to be at work on time with possible earlier starts of between 8-8.30 pre-arranged
What We're Looking For
- A full, clean UK driving licence is essential
- Someone who is confident and willing to drive regularly as part of the role
- A calm, respectful and discreet manner at all times
- Clear spoken English (this does not have to be your first language) and good interpersonal communication skills
- A reliable team player who works well in a small, close-knit environment
- Someone who is comfortable working in a mortuary environment and assisting with general care within the mortuary
- Ability to lift and carry safely using appropriate techniques and work in physically demanding settings
- Ability to remain calm and professional in difficult or sensitive situations
- A strong understanding of confidentiality and professional boundaries
- No photographs may be taken while on duty, and no information relating to our clients, families or the work undertaken may be shared. Strict confidentiality requirements will form part of the employment contract
- DBS check preferred, or willingness to undergo one
- A genuine understanding of the importance of providing care, dignity and compassion during some of the most difficult moments in people's lives
Working Hours, Overtime & On-Call
The contracted working hours for this position are:
Monday to Friday, 9:00am–3:00pm — 30 paid hours per week.
The lunch break within the working day is paid and is included within the 30 contracted hours.
Due to the nature of the funeral profession, additional hours and overtime are likely to be required from time to time.
In addition to the contracted 30 hours:
- One week of on-call duty per month is required, on a rota arranged in advance
- The on-call rota will be provided with 6 months arranged and confirmed by all staff members to suit their plans
- During the on-call week, you may be required to attend removals or other urgent duties outside of your normal contracted hours
- Applicants must be willing to participate in the on-call rota
- Additional overtime may be requested when needed, particularly during busy periods, funerals, removals or when additional cover is required
- Wherever possible, overtime will be requested and agreed in advance
- Additional hours and overtime will be paid separately in accordance with the agreed employment terms
- On-call pay: £10 per day retainer, plus additional call-out fees for removals
