We are looking for a skilled and dependable electrician to join our established facilities team at Highbury Hospital. You will help maintain the electrical systems and building services that support a safe, comfortable and reliable healthcare environment for patients, staff and visitors.
Highbury Hospital will be your primary base. However, the role also provides opportunities to support other healthcare sites within the group, providing supervision and technical oversight as part of extended Authorised Person (AP) duties. This may involve occasional travel to other locations.
The position combines planned maintenance, fault finding, statutory testing and reactive repairs. You will work alongside experienced colleagues and specialist contractors, with opportunities to broaden your knowledge of healthcare electrical systems, building services and electrical safety management.

What you will be doing
Planned and reactive maintenance
- Carry out planned and reactive electrical maintenance throughout the hospital and its grounds
- Diagnose faults and complete repairs safely, effectively and within agreed service requirements
- Provide the front-line response to electrical issues and support appropriate general building maintenance tasks when required
- Complete Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) in accordance with the agreed programme
- Assess health and safety risks before starting work and report any hazards or concerns promptly
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, breakdowns, repairs and statutory compliance activities
- Liaise with specialist subcontractors and support their work on site when required
Testing, compliance and technical oversight
- Undertake statutory and routine testing, including portable appliance testing, fire alarm testing and other relevant compliance checks
- Work in accordance with BS 7671, site electrical safety rules and established safe systems of work
- Help ensure that electrical systems remain safe, compliant and available to support hospital operations
- Support other healthcare sites within the group by providing supervision, technical guidance and assurance
- Undertake extended Authorised Person duties where appropriately trained, assessed and appointed
- Travel to other group locations when operational or technical support is required
Supporting the wider team
- Work collaboratively with engineers, maintenance colleagues and other trades
- Participate in the on-call rota, currently one week in six
- Undertake relevant technical, safety and healthcare-specific training
- Provide additional operational support and work outside normal hours when reasonably required
- Share technical knowledge and support the development of colleagues
What we are looking for
You will be a practical and capable electrician who takes pride in delivering safe, reliable work. You should be comfortable working independently, supporting colleagues and accepting wider supervisory responsibilities where required.
Essential
- Recognised electrical qualification, such as a Level 3 NVQ, completed apprenticeship, AM2/AM2S or equivalent
- Current knowledge of BS 7671, including the 18th Edition and applicable amendments
- City & Guilds 2382 or an equivalent qualification
- Previous electrical maintenance experience, ideally around three years or more
- Sound fault-finding skills and a good understanding of electrical installations
- Good knowledge of health and safety, safe working practices and risk assessment
- Ability to organise your workload and work effectively with minimal supervision
- Clear communication skills and a professional, customer-focused approach
- Willingness to participate in the on-call rota and work additional hours when operationally necessary
- Willingness to travel occasionally to other healthcare sites within the group
- Full UK driving licence, as the site pool vehicle may be used for on-call duties and travel between locations
- Willingness to complete an enhanced DBS check as a condition of employment
Desirable
- Experience within healthcare, the NHS or another safety-critical environment
- City & Guilds 2391, 2394, 2395 or an equivalent inspection and testing qualification
- Familiarity with healthcare building services and operational procedures
- Awareness of HTM 06-02 and low-voltage electrical safety requirements in healthcare premises
- Previous experience of working as an Authorised Person or Competent Person under formal electrical safety rules
- Ability and willingness to achieve the required AP or CP status following appropriate training, assessment and appointment
- Experience of supervising electrical work, contractors or maintenance colleagues
- Broader building maintenance or multi-skilled experience
