Lead a Waste Collection Team While Delivering Safe and Efficient Refuse Services
We're recruiting an experienced HGV Driver Team Leader to join a waste and recycling operation, responsible for driving refuse collection vehicles (RCVs), leading collection crews, and ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality waste collection services.
This is a frontline operational role suited to a confident LGV Category C driver with team leadership experience, strong safety awareness, and the ability to deliver excellent service standards while working independently.
About the Role:
As an HGV Driver Team Leader, you'll operate RCVs and authorised vehicles safely, supervise collection crews, complete scheduled waste collection rounds, and ensure all work is carried out in line with Council procedures, health and safety standards, and customer service expectations.
What You'll Be Doing:
- Driving refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) and other authorised vehicles safely and professionally
- Collecting household and commercial waste, including food waste, garden waste, residual waste, and recyclable materials
- Leading and supervising collection crews to ensure safe and efficient working practices
- Completing scheduled collection rounds, including assisted collections and additional operational work where required
- Carrying out daily vehicle safety checks and reporting defects immediately
- Ensuring vehicles are clean, fuelled, and maintained according to Council procedures
- Following all Health & Safety legislation, risk assessments, and safe working practices, including correct PPE usage
- Reporting accidents, incidents, near misses, and safeguarding concerns promptly
- Completing all required documentation accurately and within deadlines
- Using Council-issued technology correctly and reporting any faults
- Supporting route planning and identifying opportunities to improve service efficiency
- Maintaining high standards of customer service and representing the organisation professionally
- Attending mandatory training and maintaining a valid Driver CPC qualification
- Working from alternative depots when required to support operational needs
- Deputising for the Deputy Supervisor when required
- Supporting additional duties including loading duties, litter collection, severe weather response, and other operational services
- Working occasional evenings, weekends, bank holidays, and emergency call-outs when required
What We're Looking For:
We're looking for a dependable HGV Driver Team Leader with experience in waste collection, team supervision, and safe operational delivery.
You'll ideally have:
- Full, clean LGV Category C driving licence
- Valid Driver CPC qualification
- Previous experience in a similar HGV driving or waste collection role
- Experience leading or supervising a team
- Strong understanding of Health & Safety requirements
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard
- Commitment to delivering excellent recycling and waste collection services
- Flexible approach to duties, locations, and working hours
- Willingness to complete relevant training
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, bank holidays, and respond to emergency situations when required
- Eligibility to work in the UK
- Ability to provide two years' employment references
Nice-to-Have:
- Welsh language skills
- Knowledge of recycling, waste management, and environmental services
- Experience supporting operational planning or route optimisation
