Job Description
We are seeking a compassionate and experienced overnight carer to support a 90-year-old female client living at home in Bexley, London. The client has been diagnosed with early-stage dementia and is currently cared for at home by her elderly husband. The primary purpose of this role is to provide overnight supervision and morning personal care, allowing the client's husband — who is 89 years old — to get a full night's rest.
Care Needs The client has early-stage dementia and is prone to walking around during the night, and has experienced several falls. The overnight carer must remain awake throughout the shift (this is a waking night role) to ensure the client's safety, provide reassurance, and respond promptly to any needs or incidents. In the morning, the carer will assist with personal care including washing and getting the client ready for the day.
Schedule & Hours
- Shift hours: 10:00pm – 8:00/9:00am (approximately 10–11 hours per shift)
- Weekly hours: 70–77 hours
- This is a waking night (wake night) position — the carer is expected to remain alert and active throughout the night
- Start date: As soon as possible
Key Responsibilities
- Providing waking night supervision to ensure the client's safety overnight
- Monitoring and responding to the client's movements to prevent falls
- Offering calm reassurance and companionship if the client becomes unsettled or confused during the night
- Assisting with personal care in the morning, including washing and helping the client prepare for the day
- Handover and communication with the client's husband and any other visiting care professionals
- Supporting with respite care to relieve the primary informal carer
Existing Care Arrangements The client currently receives some visiting care support arranged through the local council, as well as additional day visits during the week. The overnight carer will work alongside these existing arrangements and is not expected to duplicate daytime care tasks.
Ideal Candidate
- Previous experience in dementia care is essential
- Experience with waking night roles and fall prevention is strongly preferred
- Patient, calm, and confident working independently overnight
- Able to engage sensitively and respectfully with both the client and her husband
- Reliable, punctual, and committed — the family is seeking someone to start as soon as possible
- Strong communication skills for handovers with family and other carers
This is a rewarding role for a carer who is passionate about supporting older adults with dementia to remain safely at home, while also providing vital relief to a dedicated family carer.
Pay: £150.00-£170.00 per day
