Are you passionate about plants, love finding the next great variety, and know what makes a range commercially successful?
If so, we’d love to hear from you.
At Crocus, plants are at the heart of what we do. We’re a passionate, knowledgeable team and one of the UK’s leading online garden retailers.
We’re looking for an experienced Plant Buyer to join our Plant Buying team and help us continue to develop an exciting, inspiring and commercially successful plant range for our customers.
This is a hands-on role with plenty of variety. You’ll have real ownership of your categories and will work with growers, suppliers and teams across Crocus to bring great plants to our customers.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll take responsibility for your own plant categories, looking after everything from planning and buying through to launch, stock, promotions and performance.
Working closely with the Head of Plant Buying and wider Plant Buying team, you’ll also work alongside our Plant Doctors, Copywriter, Procurement, E-commerce and Product teams to make sure our ranges are right for our customers and perform well commercially.
Your day-to-day will include:
- Building exciting and relevant plant ranges that our customers will love.
- Managing your categories from supplier meetings and procurement planning through to the annual range launch.
- Building great relationships with our growers and suppliers in the UK and Europe.
- Negotiating with suppliers and making sure we have the right plants, at the right quality, price and time.
- Keeping a close eye on sales, margin, stock and other KPIs, using the numbers to spot opportunities and take action.
- Working with the Head of Plant Buying to make sure our categories deliver their sales and profit targets.
- Planning promotions around key seasonal events and working with the wider team to make the most of these opportunities.
- Working with our E-commerce and Product teams to make sure new, seasonal and promotional plants are presented brilliantly across the website and in our email campaigns.
- Working closely with Procurement and the wider Plant team to keep our best-selling plants in stock and make sure seasonal plants arrive when customers want them.
- Solving problems when they arise — whether that’s a supplier issue, availability challenge or an unexpected change in demand.
- Keeping an eye on our website, competitors and the wider market to spot new ideas, trends and opportunities.
- Making sure our pricing, margins and plant quality remain competitive.
- Bringing your knowledge of plants, customers and the market to the team and helping us continually improve what we offer.
- Visiting growers and suppliers and attending trade shows in the UK and Europe, getting out there and seeing what’s new.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone who really knows their plants and enjoys the commercial side of buying.
You’ll ideally have:
- Experience working as a Plant Buyer or in a similar horticultural buying role.
- Strong plant knowledge and a genuine interest in horticulture.
- Good commercial awareness and experience managing sales, margin, stock and budgets.
- Confidence working with suppliers and negotiating great deals.
- A good eye for trends and an instinct for what customers will want next.
- An analytical approach — you’ll be comfortable looking at the numbers, but you’ll also trust your buying instinct.
- Great communication skills and the ability to work with lots of different people across the business.
- A practical, can-do attitude. Things don’t always go to plan in the plant world, so being able to find solutions and keep things moving is important!
- Good organisation and the ability to juggle different priorities in a busy, seasonal business.
- Enthusiasm for getting out to see suppliers, visit trade shows and keep up with what’s happening in the horticultural world.
Why Crocus?
Because we’re passionate about plants — and we want people who are too.
You’ll be joining a friendly, knowledgeable team where your ideas and experience will genuinely make a difference. You’ll have the opportunity to shape our plant ranges, work with some fantastic growers and suppliers, and help us give our customers an even better choice of plants.
It’s a role with real responsibility, plenty of variety and lots of opportunity to make your mark.
If you’re an experienced Plant Buyer looking for your next challenge, we’d love to talk to you.
