BEMS Commissioning Engineer Job Description.
About the Role: As a Commissioning Engineer at Imperium Building Systems, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring our technical systems are accurately tested, verified, and commissioned. You'll work closely on-site with project managers, principal engineers, and our electrical installation teams, ensuring every project meets our high standards from initial testing through final handover.
Project Specific Responsibilities
- Review and familiarise yourself with project designs, operations descriptions, network topology, and control panel documentation upon assignment.
- Assist principal engineers with software creation and development when necessary.
- Attend initial site visits alongside project management to understand the specific system requirements and installation.
- Supervise and carry out electrical testing, verification, and pre-commissioning, ensuring all documentation is accurately completed and installations meet Imperium's high standards.
- Perform approved control panel modifications as instructed, ensuring documentation is updated promptly.
- Ensure correct labelling and identification of all system components and cables throughout installation.
- Address any safety or quality concerns immediately with project managers and principal engineers; cease activities if necessary for safety.
- Power up control panels systematically, testing each circuit methodically.
- Set up and thoroughly test network systems including TCP/IP and serial devices, verifying configurations match design specifications.
- Conduct meticulous testing of all safety interlocks and operational functions.
- Connect and verify functionality of all field devices, sensors, and actuators, ensuring accurate system responses.
- Programme and set up digital field devices such as inverters, digital sensors, and display equipment.
- Perform detailed functional checks against operational descriptions, adjusting and optimising system strategies as required, alongside the principal engineer.
- Tune systems for efficient operation (PID loops, switching bands), ensuring systems perform optimally during environmental commissioning stages.
- Collaborate with principal engineers on third-party systems integration.
- Maintain regular system backups, documentation, and complete Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), ensuring thorough record-keeping for project completion.
General Responsibilities
- Participate actively in training junior team members and developing educational materials for the Imperium Academy.
- Keep abreast of industry trends, technologies, and best practices.
- Maintain high standards of professional and ethical conduct, adhering to the Engineering Council’s ethical principles.
- Support a workplace culture of safety, continuous improvement, and environmental responsibility.
Qualifications & Experience Required:
Essential Qualifications
- Relevant technical qualifications (e.g., NVQ/HNC/HND or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Building Services, or a related field).
- Strong knowledge and experience with Building Management Systems (BMS) and building services engineering.
- Proven technical experience in commissioning engineering, specifically relating to electrical, network, and automation systems.
- Competency with engineering software and diagnostic tools for testing and commissioning processes.
- Solid understanding of TCP/IP networking, serial communication protocols, and associated diagnostic tools (PING, TRACERT, IP scanners, etc.).
- Understanding of control panel wiring, modifications, and schematic drawings.
- Specific training or certification:
- BCM01 - BCM06
- ECS Card (Building Controls Engineer Grade)
- Tridium N4 TCP
- Trend Controls
Desirable Qualifications
- Professional accreditation or certification related to electrical engineering or commissioning (e.g., CEng, IEng).
- Training or certification in relevant BMS/Control systems:
Experience
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a commissioning engineer in a related industry (building services, automation, or BMS).
- Proven track record of successfully commissioning complex technical systems.
- Previous experience in supervising site-based teams and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Experience working in the high-end & luxury residential sector.
- Experience dealing directly with clients, consultants, and managing site-related documentation effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to identify technical issues proactively and implement solutions efficiently.
