Overview
We are seeking an experienced Head Gardener to lead the redevelopment and ongoing maintenance of a stunning 40-acre historic garden and estate on the Sleat Peninsula, Isle of Skye, known as the "Garden of Skye".
This is a unique opportunity to take a hands-on leadership role in transforming this breathtaking property, with features including mature trees, ponds, and a walled garden. A major focus of this role will be leading the garden team through a significant garden redesign, with projects including the rejuvenation of the walled garden to a working garden. The gardens are open to the public as a visitor attraction, making this a key role in showcasing one of Scotland's most beautiful locations.
Responsibilities
As Head Gardener, you will manage a small team of dedicated staff to ensure the highest presentation standards are maintained across the historic landscape. Responsibilities will include:
- Leading the garden team through the planning and delivery of a comprehensive garden redesign and improvement programme
- Restoring and developing the walled garden into a productive kitchen garden, including fruit and vegetable growing
- Overseeing all aspects of the gardens and surrounding area, including plant care, landscaping, and project management
- Caring for and managing a number of rare specimen trees, with particular attention to their long-term health and preservation
- Liaising with the estate management team on wider property development initiatives
- Delivering an exceptional visitor experience
Experience
The ideal candidate will have:
- Extensive horticultural knowledge, including growing fruit and vegetables
- Strong tree care and arboricultural experience (particularly with rare or specimen trees)
- Strong management skills, and a passion for preserving and revitalising historic gardens and landscapes
A full clean driving licence and relevant qualifications for operating machinery are essential.
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week, 5 days) with a competitive salary. Accommodation can be included if required.
