This role is based within a single-placement children's home, providing highly individualised care and support to one young person. In accordance with the home's registration, the service may provide care and accommodation for children with emotional and/or behavioural difficulties (EBD) and learning disabilities (LD).
Our approach focuses on building positive relationships, understanding each young person's individual needs and experiences, and providing consistent, nurturing support that enables them to develop confidence, resilience and independence.
Purpose of the Role
As a Residential Support Worker, you will work directly with the young person and form part of the team responsible for providing a safe, supportive and nurturing home environment.
You will act as a positive role model, build trusting relationships and provide individualised support in accordance with the young person's Placement Plan, risk assessments and identified needs.
The role includes supporting the young person with their emotional wellbeing, education, activities, relationships, independence and personal development, whilst maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and safeguarding responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
Provide high-quality, individualised care and support in accordance with the young person's assessed needs and plans.
Build positive, trusting and professional relationships with the young person.
Promote the young person's safety, wellbeing, development and positive outcomes.
Understand and fulfil safeguarding responsibilities and promptly report concerns.
Support the young person during periods of emotional distress or challenging situations using appropriate and agreed approaches.
Encourage the young person to express their wishes, feelings and views and ensure their voice is heard.
Support education, appointments, activities, hobbies and participation within the community.
Undertake key-working responsibilities, including planned key-work sessions and contributing to the review of Placement Plans.
Maintain detailed, accurate and timely records of care and support provided.
Follow risk assessments, behaviour-support strategies, policies and procedures.
Maintain consistent and appropriate boundaries.
Participate in young people's meetings, staff meetings, supervision and training.
Work collaboratively with colleagues, managers and other professionals involved in the young person's care.
Contribute to maintaining a safe, welcoming and nurturing home environment.
Maintain confidentiality and comply with data-protection requirements.
Raise concerns appropriately, including through safeguarding and whistleblowing procedures where necessary.
Working Pattern
Various shift patterns are available, including 12-hour day shifts, night shifts and sleep-ins (£50 per sleep-in).
Continuous/bulk shifts may also be available, subject to service requirements and safe working arrangements.
Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Easter Sunday are paid at double time. Other bank holidays are paid at one-and-a-half times.
Individual working arrangements can be discussed at interview.
Qualifications & Experience
Previous experience working with children or young people within residential care, social care, education, support work or a similar environment is desirable.
Preferred:
Experience working with children/young people – 1 year
Experience within a support environment – 1 year
Level 3 Diploma/NVQ in Residential Childcare or relevant equivalent
Experience supporting children with emotional and/or behavioural difficulties and/or learning disabilities
Applicants without the Level 3 qualification may be considered where they demonstrate the appropriate values, experience and willingness to undertake the required qualification.
