Sweetbriar is a trusted provider of water hygiene and Legionella risk management services, working with clients across residential, commercial, and specialist sites — including communal residential blocks, and commercial premises — to keep water systems safe, compliant, and well-managed under HSG274 and ACOP L8.
As our client base grows, we're looking for an experienced Water Hygiene Engineer who is ready to take the next step into a Supervisory/Team Leader role, combining hands-on technical expertise with the leadership of a small team of engineers.
The Role
This is an ideal opportunity for a competent, experienced water hygiene engineer looking to progress beyond a purely field-based role. You'll continue to carry out and oversee technical work, while taking on responsibility for guiding, coordinating, and developing a team of engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out and oversee Legionella risk assessments, reviews, and remedial works in line with HSG274 and specific guidance
- Supervise a team of water hygiene engineers, technical support, and day-to-day guidance
- Conduct quality checks and audits of completed works and documentation to ensure consistency and compliance
- Support and mentor junior/less experienced engineers, helping to develop their technical knowledge
- Act as an escalation point for technical queries and on-site issues
- Assist management with reviewing and interpreting sample results (Legionella, TVC/APC), and advising on appropriate corrective actions
- Ensure control measures (flushing regimes, temperature monitoring, descaling, disinfections) are being carried out correctly and recorded accurately
- Support the wider team with training, toolbox talks, and sharing best practice
- Help maintain and improve internal processes, procedures, and reporting standards
- Travel to sites will be expected to assist with junior engineers and the water hygiene team
- Assistance with callout rota (1 week in 5)
What We're Looking For
- Proven experience as a Water Hygiene Engineer, with a solid working knowledge of HSG274 and ACOP L8
- Relevant qualifications (e.g., City & Guilds Legionella Control, LCA/WMSoc training) desirable
- Hands-on experience with risk assessments, water sampling, temperature monitoring, descaling, and disinfection works
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to liaise professionally with clients
- Some prior experience mentoring, guiding, or informally leading colleagues — or a clear desire and readiness to step into a formal leadership role
- Well organised, methodical, and comfortable managing multiple sites/jobs at once
- Full valid UK driving licence
