About the role
Balfour Beatty is seeking an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our team on the landmark North Hykeham Relief Road project in Lincolnshire. This major infrastructure scheme will deliver the final section of the Lincoln radial ring road, creating a new 8km dual carriageway connecting the A46 west of Lincoln to the A15 at Sleaford Road and significantly improving regional connectivity.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a key commercial role on a complex and high-profile civil engineering project featuring major earthworks, highways construction, and the delivery of five new structures, including a striking 100m three-span bridge crossing the River Witham. Additional structures include the Station Road Overbridge, Wath Lane Accommodation Bridge, Viking Way Footbridge, and a dedicated Bat Bridge, alongside multiple new junctions connecting to the existing local road network.
As Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will be instrumental in managing the commercial performance of the project, ensuring value is maximised, risks are effectively managed, and commercial objectives are achieved throughout the construction lifecycle. Joining Balfour Beatty means contributing to infrastructure that will leave a lasting legacy for the region while working within a collaborative team on one of Lincolnshire's most significant highways schemes.
What you'll be doing
- Managing all commercial and contractual aspects of the project, from initial cost planning through to final account agreement.
- Controlling project costs and ensuring the successful commercial delivery of the North Hykeham Relief Road scheme.
- Maximising value for money while maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety and project performance.
- Preparing, reviewing and negotiating subcontract packages, valuations, variations and compensation events.
- Monitoring project budgets, forecasting costs and identifying commercial risks and opportunities.
- Producing accurate financial reports and providing commercial insight to support project decision-making.
- Working closely with operational teams to ensure commercial objectives are aligned with programme and delivery requirements.
- Managing client and stakeholder relationships, ensuring contractual obligations are met and commercial issues are resolved effectively.
- Supporting the Commercial Manager or Managing Quantity Surveyor in delivering the project's commercial strategy.
- Leading and developing a small team of Quantity Surveyors and Assistant Quantity Surveyors, providing guidance, support and performance management.
- Mentoring and coaching junior commercial professionals, helping them progress towards professional qualifications with organisations such as RICS, ICES or CIOB.
- Driving best practice commercial management processes and ensuring compliance with Balfour Beatty procedures and governance requirements.
- Contributing to a collaborative project environment focused on achieving successful outcomes for the client, stakeholders and local community.
Who we're looking for
- BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying (or a related commercial discipline).
- Membership of RICS, ICES or CIOB (or actively working towards chartership).
- Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor on civil engineering, highways or major infrastructure projects.
- Strong knowledge of NEC contracts, commercial management and cost control.
- Experience preparing forecasts, valuations, variations and final accounts.
- Ability to build strong relationships with clients, stakeholders and project teams.
- Experience mentoring and developing junior commercial team members.
- Commercially astute, detail-oriented and able to identify risks and opportunities.
- Excellent communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
