Contract: Part-time, Permanent
Hours: 24 hours per week, fixed night-shift pattern (details below)
Salary: £13.45 per hour
About Us
Stradey Park Care Home is a well-established residential care home in the heart of Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, providing high-quality care for adults with learning disabilities, mental health needs and physical disabilities for over 32 years. We accommodate up to eight residents and pride ourselves on offering a safe, stable and homely environment, supported by a dedicated staff team.
Our residents do not present with behaviours that challenge, which allows our team to focus on consistent, structured, person-centred care throughout the night.
The Role
We are looking for a reliable and compassionate Waking Night Support Worker to remain awake and alert throughout the night, providing high-quality care and support to our residents. You will carry out welfare checks, respond to residents' needs as they arise, and help ensure the home runs safely and smoothly overnight, working under the guidance of the Registered Manager and handing over clearly to the day team each morning.
Shift Pattern
This is a fixed, contracted shift pattern rather than an ad hoc or flexible rota:
- Shift times: 9:00pm to 9:00am (12-hour night shifts)
- Week 1: Wednesday and Thursday night
- Week 2: Friday and Saturday night
- This two-week pattern then repeats, totalling 24 contracted hours per week.
Key Responsibilities
- Remain awake and vigilant throughout the shift, carrying out regular welfare checks on residents.
- Provide personal care overnight — including assisting with toileting, repositioning, and settling residents — with dignity and respect.
- Administer medication in line with residents' care plans and the home's medicines policy.
- Respond promptly and calmly to residents' needs, or to any emergencies, during the night.
- Maintain accurate overnight records and provide a clear handover to day staff.
- Carry out light household duties (e.g. laundry, tidying communal areas) during quieter periods.
- Help ensure the safety and security of the building overnight, including fire safety checks.
- Offer reassurance and support to residents who wake or become unsettled.
- Undertake ongoing training relevant to the role and support new staff as needed.
- Promote the independence, choice, dignity and respect of all residents at all times.
Essential Requirements
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team, including liaising clearly with day staff.
- Ability to work alone and use initiative during the night shift, while knowing when to escalate concerns.
- Physically able to remain alert and active throughout a 12-hour night shift.
- A respectful, courteous and compassionate nature, with a willingness to undertake all aspects of the role.
- A relevant qualification, such as QCF Level 2 Health and Social Care or equivalent, or a commitment to completing this within your first 3 years of employment.
- Able to reliably reach the home for a 9:00pm start; candidates should ideally live within commutable distance, as public transport may be limited at these hours.
What We Offer
- £13.45 per hour.
- 24 hours per week on the fixed night-shift pattern set out above.
- 5.6 weeks' annual leave per year (inclusive of bank holidays), calculated pro rata.
- Full DBS check provided.
- Pension contributions.
- Ongoing development and training opportunities.
- A supportive and homely working environment.
How to Apply
If you are a reliable and compassionate person who would suit working nights, we encourage you to apply. Please submit your CV and a cover letter detailing your suitability for the role.
