Summary of the role:
The Officer of the Watch (OOW) is responsible for supporting the safe, efficient, and compliant navigation and operation of vessels. The role ensures effective watchkeeping, supports vessel command, and supervises deck operations in line with maritime regulations and company procedures.
Reporting to the Vessel Master, the OOW plays a key role in day-to-day vessel operations, maintaining safe navigation, supporting dredging activities, and supervising crew during operations. With a strong safety-first and operational mindset, this role is critical in maintaining safe and efficient marine operations.
Summary of Main Responsibilities:
- Undertake navigational watchkeeping duties in accordance with STCW and company procedures
- Support the Vessel Master in the safe navigation and operation of the vessel
- Ensure compliance with international maritime conventions (SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM Code), port regulations, and company policies
- Supervise deck crew during operations including mooring, unmooring, and dredging activities
- Support dredging operations, including monitoring equipment and deck activities
- Conduct routine safety rounds, inspections, and risk assessments
- Maintain accurate logs, records, and operational documentation
- Participate in and support emergency response procedures and drills
- Coordinate with port authorities, crew, and stakeholders to support safe operations
- Support the implementation and adherence to safety management systems onboard
Experience and skills:
- Strong navigational and watchkeeping capability
- Good understanding of maritime regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM Code)
- Knowledge of navigation practices, bridge equipment, and safety procedures
- Awareness of dredging operations and deck activities (desirable)
- Good leadership and supervisory skills
- Effective communication and teamwork ability
- Sound decision-making and situational awareness
Role related activities:
- Operates on a week-on/week-off rotation aligned to operational requirements
- Required to work onboard vessels in operational and bridge environments
- Undertakes navigational watches, inspections, and operational duties
- Participates in drills, audits, and compliance activities
- Engages with port authorities and stakeholders during operations
- Maintains all required certifications and training
Education and exposure:
- STCW Officer of the Watch (OOW) Certificate of Competency (essential)
- Valid ENG1 Medical Certificate (essential)
- Experience in a watchkeeping role within marine operations
- Experience within dredging, port, or nearshore environments (desirable)
- Exposure to supervising crew and deck operations
