T Brown Recruitment is delighted to be working with a well-established and highly regarded law firm seeking an experienced Family Legal Assistant to join its busy and supportive Family team in Shirley.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Legal Assistant, Legal Secretary or experienced Legal Administrator looking to develop their career within a professional and supportive legal environment.
You will work closely with experienced fee earners, providing high-quality legal and administrative support across a varied Family Law caseload.
The Role
As Family Legal Assistant, your responsibilities will include:
- Preparing and amending legal documents, including tracked changes and comparison documents
- Providing comprehensive administrative support to fee earners
- Managing fee earner diaries, appointments and meetings
- Preparing client bills and assisting with client reporting
- Maintaining accurate and well-organised legal files
- Preparing and handling correspondence
- Providing audio and copy typing support
- Liaising professionally with clients, solicitors and other third parties by telephone and email
- Assisting with general legal and administrative duties within the Family team
- Supporting the smooth and efficient progression of matters
About You
We are looking for someone with previous experience in a Legal Assistant, Legal Secretary or similar legal support role, ideally within Family Law.
You will ideally have:
- Previous experience supporting fee earners within a legal environment
- Excellent document production skills, including tracked changes and document comparison
- Strong diary management and organisational skills
- Audio and copy typing experience
- A professional and confident telephone manner
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel
- The ability to manage competing priorities and work accurately under pressure
- A professional, client-focused approach
- The ability to work effectively as part of a team while also using your own initiative
Experience using LexisNexis Smart Forms would be advantageous but is not essential.

Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive administrative support to family law attorneys, including scheduling appointments, managing calendars, and coordinating meetings.
- Prepare, review, and format legal documents such as affidavits, petitions, and correspondence using Microsoft Word and other Office applications.
- Conduct audio typing of dictations, notes, and legal documents swiftly and accurately to meet tight deadlines.
- Maintain organized case files both digitally and physically, ensuring all documentation is up-to-date and easily accessible.
- Communicate effectively with clients, courts, and external agencies via phone, email, and written correspondence to facilitate case progress.
- Utilize Microsoft Outlook for scheduling, email management, and task prioritization to optimize workflow.
- Assist with IT-related tasks such as troubleshooting basic software issues or setting up new systems to support daily operations.
- Manage time efficiently to handle multiple cases simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy.
Qualifications
- Proven administrative experience in a legal or office environment is preferred.
- Strong audio typing skills with high accuracy and speed.
- Excellent communication skills—both verbal and written—to liaise confidently with clients and colleagues.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook; familiarity with IT systems is advantageous.
- Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively in a busy setting.
- Demonstrated time management skills to meet deadlines consistently.
- Knowledge of family law procedures or previous experience supporting family legal teams is a plus but not required.
