Family Support Volunteers
Home-Start Birmingham- supporting local families across the city.
Life can be difficult for so many reasons; poverty, poor mental health, illness and isolation can all affect a parent’s ability to cope. And this is where Home-Start’s home-visiting volunteers step in. Volunteering your time will help change a family’s life.
We are looking for enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers to support families in joining our teams right across Birmingham!
As a volunteer, you will play a vital role in helping to give children the best possible start in life, by supporting parents in their time of need. You will provide- a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear and a practical pair of hands.
This role is ideal for individuals who have a passion for making a positive impact in the community, particularly with parents and children. You will not need prior experience, as all of our volunteers will receive full training before being matched with a family to support.
You will
- Visit a local family in their own home once a week (typically for 2-3 hours)
- Offer a mix of emotional and practical support
- Be led by the family’s needs
- Support the family, in a friendly and non-judgemental way
- Receive on-going support and attend regular supervisions with a Home-Start staff member.
Qualifications
- Parenting, or care-giving experience is desirable.
- A friendly, approachable demeanour with excellent communication and listening skills
- No formal qualifications are needed, as compulsory training is given, (including Safeguarding).
- You will undergo a DBS check
Many of our volunteers have found that once their youngest child starts school, they have some spare time on their hands and want to use their experience of parenting very young children, to help others. Just a couple of hours each week can make a vital difference to a local family who is struggling to cope.
By volunteering with us, you will be helping to give more children across Birmingham brighter futures.
All Six of our Birmingham Home-Starts offer home-visiting volunteer opportunities, however some of our Home-Starts also run a range of groups and projects to support families outside of the home and have volunteer opportunities at these too.
