About Applied AI:
We are looking for a Research Engineer to join our Applied AI team at InstaDeep. Our Applied AI team tackles the hardest unsolved optimisation problems that industry has to offer, from reducing energy grid wastage to satellite scheduling. We are building the next generation of optimisation solutions to bring industry into the AI era.
Our Applied AI team offers the full stack for research engineers to turn their ideas into cutting-edge real-world applications: a supporting MLOps team, 224 in-house H100s, and software teams to help turn your algorithms into products.
Role of Research Engineer:
Research Engineers in Applied AI focus on algorithm design and training. This means bringing broad knowledge of techniques and research in reinforcement learning, deep learning and optimisation. It involves recognising real-world problems in which these new techniques can be applied and then building the algorithms to solve them. Research engineers act as the interface between cutting-edge research and high-impact engineering.
Day to day, this looks like:
- Workshops, tours and meetings with industrial clients to understand the problems they are facing.
- Brainstorming and prototyping new research ideas for solving these problems.
- Building and rapidly iterating on existing implementations through large-scale experiments and high-quality engineering.
- Training models on InstaDeep's compute (as of 2024, among the top 20 H100 GPU clusters worldwide).
- Deploying, reviewing the real-world results, and improving with new research ideas.
- Crucially, reviewing our current practices and how we can improve — we are always open to new ideas!
- Optionally supporting pre-sales and Business Development with your combined domain and AI expertise.
The Perfect Candidate
We are looking for someone with:
Requirements:
- Professional experience in AI Research, Applied AI/ML or Mathematical Optimization — and/or a track record of leading AI teams and large-scale projects.
- Proven experience in software development in Python, ideally in projects with codebases with multiple contributors and version control
- Agentic coding experience to complement your software engineering skills. Experience building multi-agent workflows, knowledge layers etc. is a bonus.
Nice to have:
- Direct experience in Reinforcement Learning and/or combinatorial optimisation. Experience in scaling RL is a bonus!
- Hands-on experience with high-performance computing (Kubernetes, Ray, etc.).
- Systems thinker: can understand complex and potentially abstract processes and optimise them.
- Strong communication and teamwork: we operate as a team. Understanding each other and knowing where the information exists is crucial for success.
- Pre-sales and business development experience.
- Domain expertise in Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Aviation, or Energy.
The candidate also must have:
Right to work in the UK — visa sponsorship is not available.
Office attendance 3 days/week (no remote roles).
Benefits:
- Dedicated time for personal development, plus InstaDeep-provided education.
- Long-term incentive stock plans.
- Private health insurance.
- Monthly gym allowance.
