About the role
For some young people, putting something down on paper can be easier than putting it into words.
Art can give a young person a way to express something they cannot explain. It can give them the confidence to try, make mistakes and try again. It can create moments of achievement for pupils who may have spent years feeling that school was somewhere they could not succeed.
A specialist education setting in London is looking for an inspiring Art Teacher to join their team and make a genuine difference to young people with social, emotional and mental health needs.
This is an opportunity for a teacher who believes that education should be about more than grades.
The setting
The setting supports young people with SEMH needs who may have experienced difficulties in mainstream education.
The environment is safe, nurturing and highly supportive, with a strong focus on individual needs, wellbeing and personal development.
Classrooms are designed to give pupils the structure and stability they need while allowing staff to build genuine relationships with them.
As an Art Teacher, you will have the opportunity to create a classroom where pupils feel safe enough to experiment, express themselves and succeed.
You will:
- Plan and deliver engaging Art lessons for pupils with SEMH needs
- Adapt lessons to meet different learning abilities and individual needs
- Teach a broad and engaging Art curriculum covering practical and theoretical elements
- Introduce pupils to different artists, techniques, materials and creative processes
- Encourage creativity, critical thinking and independent expression
- Assess and monitor pupil progress
- Use assessment information to inform future planning
- Set realistic and personalised targets for pupils
- Maintain high expectations for learning and behaviour
- Create a safe, organised and inclusive classroom environment
- Work closely with pastoral and support staff to understand individual pupil needs
- Contribute to EHCP reviews and communicate pupil progress where required
- Promote positive behaviour through consistency, reflection and restorative approaches
Who we are looking for:
We are looking for an Art Teacher who genuinely wants to make a difference.
You may already have experience working with pupils with SEMH needs, SEN or within alternative provision. Equally, you may be an experienced mainstream Art Teacher looking to move into a more specialist setting.

You will understand that behaviour is often communication.
You will recognise that a pupil refusing to participate may need connection before instruction.
And you will understand that progress can look very different from pupil to pupil.

Art can help change that.
There is no single way to create something. Pupils can experiment, make mistakes, start again and discover that getting something wrong does not mean they have failed.
They can develop confidence, patience, concentration and independence while creating something that belongs entirely to them.
Sometimes the biggest success will not be an outstanding piece of artwork.
It will be the pupil who finally picks up a paintbrush.
The pupil who stays in the lesson.
The pupil who shows their work to someone else for the first time.
