About the Role
We are looking for a compassionate, experienced, and dedicated Senior Carer to join our friendly team at our 62-bed care home in Barnsley, providing both Residential and EMI (Elderly Mentally Infirm) care. As a Senior Carer, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality, person-centred care while supporting the day-to-day running of the care team.
You will lead by example, ensuring residents receive safe, dignified, and compassionate care that promotes independence, wellbeing, and quality of life.
Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Carer, your responsibilities will include:
- Providing high-quality personal care, ensuring each resident's dignity, privacy, and independence are always respected.
- Leading and supervising Care Assistants during your shift, offering guidance, support, and mentoring.
- Administering medication safely and accurately in accordance with company policies and current legislation (where trained and competent).
- Developing, reviewing, and updating person-centred care plans and risk assessments.
- Monitoring residents' physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing, reporting any concerns promptly.
- Supporting residents living with dementia and other cognitive impairments using compassionate, person-centred approaches.
- Completing accurate daily records, care documentation, incident reports, and handovers.
- Communicating effectively with residents, relatives, healthcare professionals, and the wider multidisciplinary team.
- Assisting with admissions, assessments, and transitions into the home.
- Promoting residents' choice, independence, and participation in meaningful activities.
- Responding appropriately to emergencies and escalating concerns where necessary.
- Ensuring safeguarding procedures are followed and concerns are reported without delay.
- Supporting infection prevention and control procedures, health and safety requirements, and maintaining a clean, safe environment.
- Participating in staff supervisions, training, competency assessments, and team meetings.
- Acting as a positive role model, helping to maintain a supportive and professional working environment.
Leadership Responsibilities
- Lead the shift effectively and ensure continuity of care.
- Allocate duties appropriately according to residents' needs and staff competencies.
- Monitor the quality of care being delivered throughout the shift.
- Support new starters through induction and ongoing mentoring.
- Escalate staffing or clinical concerns to the management team promptly.
- Promote a positive culture that values respect, teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
What We're Looking For
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
Essential
- Previous experience working as a Senior Carer or experienced Care Assistant within a residential, dementia, or nursing care setting.
- A genuine passion for delivering outstanding care to older people.
- Experience supporting residents living with dementia.
- Medication administration experience (or willingness to undertake training if required).
- Strong leadership and organisational skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and make sound decisions.
- Good written and verbal English.
- Competent IT skills for electronic care records.
- A good understanding of safeguarding, dignity, equality, and person-centred care.
- Flexibility to work shifts, including weekends and bank holidays.
Desirable
- NVQ/QCF Level 3 in Health & Social Care (or working towards).
- Previous experience leading shifts.
- Knowledge of CQC Fundamental Standards.
- Experience using electronic care planning systems.
