Derwent Lodge Nursing Home is seeking a reliable and proactive Maintenance Operative to take responsibility for the upkeep and maintenance of the Home and its surrounding grounds. This is a varied and rewarding role that will ensure our residents, visitors and staff enjoy a safe, comfortable and well-maintained environment. Key Responsibilities:
- Report any known defects to appliances, damaged furniture/equipment, or other potential hazards to the Home Manager, and act according to their guidance.
- Assist with the general repair and maintenance of the Home, both internally and externally, to ensure smooth operation and high service standards.
- Supervise the upkeep of the Home’s grounds, including work carried out by handyperson(s), to maintain a pleasant and safe environment for residents, staff, and visitors.
- Undertake decorating duties as required to uphold the Home’s standards.
- Test the fire alarm system and log results weekly; check call points, fire exits, door-retaining devices, and emergency lighting in line with company procedures.
- Ensure all ventilation units and lighting are kept clean; replace defective bulbs or diffusers.
- Oversee the Home’s heating, lighting, and water usage.
- Maintain the Maintenance Book, recording defects reported by staff and carrying out repairs or replacements as needed.
- Manage stores, equipment, and tools.
- Assist or supervise deliveries to the Home and monitor delivered goods carefully.
- Maintain grassed areas, flower beds, hedges, shrubs, and borders.
- Carry out landscaping duties, including drainage clearance, pathways, and steps.
- Clear leaves across the site, using both machinery and manual methods.
- Undertake minor repairs throughout the estate.
- Assist with guttering and gully clearance.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- General maintenance knowledge and experience (e.g., minor electrical work, decorating, plumbing, joinery).
- Previous experience in grounds maintenance and care.
- Strong knowledge of plant operation and upkeep.
- Competent in working to Health & Safety and COSHH regulations.
- Full, clean driving licence and access to a car or similar vehicle.
- Ability to work to tight deadlines and manage conflicting demands.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise tasks.
- Willingness to undertake training in current Health & Safety and EHO requirements.
- Satisfactory Enhanced DBS check.
