We are seeking a positive, motivated, and engaging self-employed tutor to deliver Maths and English sessions on a freelance basis within our alternative provision in Birkenhead, Wirral.
You will be working with children and young people aged 11–16 who are struggling within mainstream education, many of whom present with additional needs. This role is ideal for qualified teachers, experienced tutors, teaching assistants, or education professionals who are passionate about supporting young people through personalised learning and strong relationships.
The ideal candidate
The ideal candidate will have a genuine interest in and commitment to working with children and young people, particularly those who experience challenges within mainstream education. They will be engaging and adaptable, while also calm, patient, and resilient, with the ability to build positive, trusting relationships.
You will:
- Be passionate about supporting young people to re-engage with Maths and English
- Have experience delivering 1:1 and small group tuition
- Have experience working with young people aged 11–16, ideally within an alternative provision, education, SEND, or similar setting
- Have an understanding of, or experience working with, ASD, ADHD, SEMH, and/or challenging behaviour
- Have strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Be able to differentiate learning to meet a wide range of needs and abilities
- Have the ability to manage and de-escalate challenging situations effectively
What you'll be doing
- Delivering engaging, structured Maths and English sessions tailored to individual needs
- Working with individuals and small groups who may be disengaged from education
- Supporting learners to build confidence, core skills, and independence
- Adapting teaching approaches to suit different learning styles and needs
- Using creative and flexible approaches to re-engage students in learning
- Maintaining a calm, proactive approach to behaviour management
- Supporting young people with SEND needs, including ASD, ADHD, SEMH, and challenging behaviour
Hours & Contract
- Self-employed / contractor role
- Typically 4–6 hours per week (up to 10 hours)
- Between 10am–2pm, Monday–Friday
- Hours may vary depending on need and availability
- Potential for increased hours as the provision develops
Essential skills & experience
- Experience and a genuine interest in working with children or young people with SEND (11–16)
- Experience delivering Maths and/or English tuition at KS3/KS4 level
- A calm, patient, and resilient approach
- Confidence working with young people who may be dysregulated or disengaged from education
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
Desirable experience
- Experience working with ASD, ADHD, SEMH, or challenging behaviour
- Background in:
- Education (qualified teachers, tutors, or teaching assistants)
- Alternative provision or SEND settings
- Youth work or mentoring
- Relevant qualifications in Maths, English, Education, or related fields
- Experience preparing students for GCSEs or functional skills qualifications
