Process Engineer – Die Casting

The Opportunity
Our client, experienced within the automotive sector, is seeking an experienced Process Engineer – Die Casting to join their operations team in Telford.
Reporting to the Die Casting Process Supervisor, this role is responsible for delivering robust and sustainable High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) processes through technical expertise, innovation, and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will play a key role in driving operational excellence, supporting new product introductions, and developing process capability across the function.
Key Responsibilities
- Promote and uphold Health, Safety and Environmental standards across the department and plant.
- Maintain a strong presence on the shop floor, providing technical leadership on all Die Casting process-related matters.
- Lead casting defect diagnosis, identifying KPIVs and influencing process parameters to optimise performance.
- Work closely with Production Teams to ensure delivery objectives are met, including Tier 3 daily meeting representation.
- Develop and maintain process documentation, including Standard Work Instructions (SWI).
- Own and manage PFMEA documentation, driving score reduction and improvement projects.
- Deliver process improvement strategies focused on OEE enhancement and cost avoidance.
- Lead continuous improvement (CI) activities within upstream processes.
- Conduct root cause analysis (including 8D methodology) to investigate and resolve process issues.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance across the business unit.
- Support new product introductions through design input, launches, burst builds, and tool trials.
- Develop strong supplier relationships to ensure ongoing advancement in HPDC technology.
Essential Experience & Skills
- Previous experience within High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) environments.
- Strong understanding of tooling design impact on die casting processes.
- Experience with PFMEA, Lean Manufacturing principles, and OEE improvement.
- Knowledge of control systems and process parameter management.
- Poka-Yoke (error proofing) implementation experience.
- Methodical DOE approach and KPIV identification expertise.
- Root cause analysis and structured problem-solving (8D).
- Process change management experience.
- Strong leadership capability with mentoring and coaching experience.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to create and manage Standard Work Instructions.
Desirable Experience
- Recognised Mechanical Engineering qualification.
- ABB robot programming and fault-finding (IRC5).
- Understanding of VSM and SMED methodologies.
- Previous Tier 1 automotive experience.
- Exposure to APQP, PPAP and Run at Rate events.
- Traceability systems knowledge.
- Pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical fault-finding capability.
- Basic CAD/model manipulation and simple engineering drawing creation.
- Metallurgy knowledge, particularly aluminium alloy behaviour.
- Competency in pressure, force, area, and mass calculations.
